24 & Nervous, await screening…

So... I've been getting breast pain for a couple months now, it's been getting a lot worse these last few weeks. I'm 24 and no breast cancer with my close family, only great grandmother.

I went to the doctors yesterday and they found a lump... heart just dropped. She did mention it might just be hormonal and a lot of women get it... doesn't make it any easier though, your mind just goes crazy! I've had my referral through and hoping to get an appointment in the next couple of weeks for the screening.

any advice would he much appreciated... trying to stay positive!

  • Hello EmilyLx.

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some concerns about your breast health recently. You did exactly the right things in speaking to your GP about your worries and it's completely understandable that you're feeling anxious about your referral to the breast clinic.

It's not uncommon for younger women to have lumpy breasts and the problems you've been experiencing may well be related to your hormones. The important thing is that you're now going to get this checked out. it may help to know that the vast majority of people who attend breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer so just take things a day at a time and try to stay positive.

We know that waiting for appointments can be a stressful time. It can help to talk to someone and I wonder if you'd find it useful to chat with one of our team of nurses. If you'd like to speak with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Keep in touch Emily and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
