Help with lung cancer diagnosis

My nan had been coughing up blood for a few months. She recently had an X Ray which showed a shadow on her lung. She has also had a CT but has not been told the results of these. She has been referred to a respiratory clinic and we can't help but wonder whether anyone else has been through this and then been diagnosed with lung cancer? Would they refer to a resp clinic or would it be to a cancer ward instead?

  • Hi mynamesabbey,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be difficult with the uncertainty around the situation with your nan. It's hard to say what they may be thinking at this point, but it sounds like they're working to find out what's going on and to rule things in or out. Hopefully it won't be long before you get the results, and of course do discuss any questions with the medical team when appropriate.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Thank you.

We've just found out she's got a biopsy at the hospital tomorrow, the GP has called her today to say it does look like cancer and he also discussed chemo/radio. He hasn't gave a diagnosis but we think he was maybe preparing her for what's to come.

  • As an update to this, in case anyone comes across. My nan did have lung cancer and they diagnosed her by a letter that said “likely cancer” we was left guessing as to whether or not she has cancer for just under a year. She went into hospital around 7 months after being told she had likely cancer and was told it had spread and she had 3-6 months left to live. She didn’t get offered treatment due to being fragile but in the end only lived 6 weeks following the news it had spread.
