Painful mole

Hi,

Was just wondering if anyone could give me any honest advice please?

I am a 37 year old female and I have a really painful mole on my torso around the size of a 5p coin.  It's like a constant dull ache and very painful and sore to touch. It has been like this now for 3 years (I know I should have checked it out sooner) but it is getting worse. I wasn't too concerned when it first started hurting but just before the first lockdown the pain increased and it started to grow slightly bigger but in an irregular shape. This mole has only been on my torso I'd say for about 5 years. I wasn't born with it. I kept putting it off because of the whole covid situation but now I feel like I've left it so long I'm too scared to see my GP about it.
Has anyone here had anything similar before and if so did you get it removed? Was it cancerous? If so I would really appreciate your honesty.

Thanking you all in advance.

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are going through this anxiety. Malignant moles don't tend to be painful but if it's been changing too then you definitely need to see your GP for them to decide if you need referring to a dermatologist. Your GP may ask you to send photos if they aren't yet doing face to face appointments. They may then send them through to dermatology for them to assess them or your GP may make a referral for you to see dermatology.

Melanoma doesn't always present the same for everyone so that's why any worrying mole should be checked out. There is a 75% chance that it will be fine & that the pain is caused by something easily treatable. Otherwise, there is a 20% chance it's dysplastic (precancerous) whilst only 5% are diagnosed as melanoma. So the odds are good that yours may be fine but it really needs checking out. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you so much for your reassurance. I have bit the bullet and filled out an e consult form today and have uploaded photos too. thanks again ️
