Not being listened to by GP - Symptoms of Leukaemia

I'm looking for some advice. I'm 24 years old and I have symptoms that match Leakemia which have not gone away and I feel like my GP isn't listening to the fact that I should be referred for a test. For the last few months multiple blood tests have shown my white blood cells are down, I have had dizziness leading to fainting which they can't find an answer for, I get sweats through the night, sometimes waking up with wet hair from where I have been so hot. I am naturally pale anyway but do notice that I bruise easily. I have been picking up infections regularly (four in the last year) and currently have flu like symptoms too. I have also had an all over rash which started in one area and has spread to my entire body within the last 3 weeks which they have treated with steroids but kept putting down to different things from fungal to an allergic reaction despite not having allergies etc. My GP has now said they can't point out exactly what's causing this severe rash. At one point my GP bought in a second opinion who even mentioned petechia. I have seen 5 different doctors this week who can't work out where the rash has come from. I really feel I need a test for my ongoing symptoms as I'm aware my age is where this type of Leaukemia is common but feel I'm being seen as dramatic. What can I do?

  • Hi ChloeNicole,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing difficulties getting answers for what's going on.

Naturally it's only really a doctor who can advise on this, but it is of course important that you do get some answers for your situation. I'm not sure if you've been given any next steps (for example being told to get back in touch if things don't improve), but if you haven't or you remain concerned about your symptoms, the only thing to really do is to go back to the doctor and explain that you're worried, that things are difficult and that you feel you need some answers. There's no harm in suggesting further tests to see what they say.

It sounds like you've already had the opinions of a few doctors, but we have some information on our website about getting a second opinion if you'd like to try a slightly different route.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
