Awaiting CT Scan for growth on my Kidney

Not sure really where to start as I guess this might all be for nothing. But I have had a pain in my right side for months and months now. Went to the GP in June and he referred me for a scan, we thought it might be my gallbladder.
Fast forward to last Wednesday when I finally had my ultrasound scan. They didn't tell me anything when I was there, and had a phone call from my GP yesterday lunch time.

He basically told me I have a 4cm growth on my right kidney and they need to refer me for an urgent CT scan. He said best case scenario it's a cyst and they'll do nothing, worst case scenario I'll have to have my kidney removed.

I'm a nurse so have some idea of what's going on, but my main concern is that if it was a fluid filled cyst they would have picked it up on the US scan. So obviously my thoughts are going to worst case scenario. Especially as I haven't been well for a while, I thought I had long covid.

Now I'm in a weird place of waiting, where everything could be absolutely fine (although not because I'm still getting pain) so yeah, I guess I just figured I'd share where I'm at.

Does anyone have any similar experiences with this?

  • Hi Thisisweird,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can imagine things must feel very uncertain and unsettling at the moment and I'm sure the waiting may be difficult. Try not to assume anything at this point, although I know it's sometimes natural to worry.

Take things a day at a time and I hope it's not too long to wait for your appointment and for you to get the answers you need and any next steps.

Hopefully you'll receive further replies soon, particularly if there are others here with similar experience.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
