Breast/armpit lump

Hello everyone,

I hope your all very well. So back in July of this year I found a small growth on the side of my tongue, it looked very suspicious. My GP sat me down and informed me that she was very worried I had mouth cancer. I was urgently referred to see a specialist dentist. This was the worst time of my life. I was out of my mind with worry. I had it removed and thankfully it was benign. Not very happy with my GP for scaring me half to death.

So around a week after my results I was at work and noticed my armpit was really hurting. Lifting or stretching was very painful. I came home and investigated. Both my lymph nodes were swallon under my armpits, My nipple had a red patch around the top section and there was a lump here also. It was very spongy and I could move it around the nipple it was around the size of a large grape and it was very painful.

I phoned my GP (new GP) who asked me to go in immediately. After a very painful 15min breast exam she told me that she was concerned, however because I was not ill in myself we would try antibiotics first as I'm only 29 with no family history etc.

I took the antibiotics which relived my armpits and red patch around my nipple. The lump had shrunk by day 4 and I thought we had mastered this little monster. It was now the size of a pea. But it's very different now it's very fixed to the tissue behind my nipple and it's hard as nails. It doesn't hurt 1 bit to touch.

My GP said if it's not gone within 3 weeks (which was yesterday) she would refer me. I have been in this morning to ask the receptionist to pass on a message. So now it looks like I'll be going to the breast clinic.

I'm not sure I can do all this waiting and testing again. I guess what I'm curious about is why has it stopped hurting? Why has it gone hard? Has any other other ladies/gents had this? Have you had a painful lump that's turned sneeky on you and cause no problems? What was your outcome?

Last of all I want to say that for anyone reading this or on these forums, I hope you have a great day and I hope that you all get the results your so patiently waiting for

  • Hi Lisaajane,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can understand this must be unsettling and no doubt it will be difficult going through the waiting and uncertainty again.

It's good to hear that the doctor has been helpful so far and that you now have the referral to see the specialist - this should mean you get the answers you need before too long.

Unfortunately it's not really possible to answer your questions at this point - the only real option is to wait for your appointment and to get the information that follows. Try to keep busy in the meantime while you wait, to help keep your mind off things.

I hope you find out more soon. Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
