Hysteroscopy appointment

Hello everyone,

I am starting a new thread here - I first posted becuase I have been experiencing pelvic pain and bleeding. This started about May 2021. I am on mini Pill Cerelle/desogestrel and have never bled on this before. I am 37 years old, no children.

In summary, GP checked me over and prescribed tranexamic acid to reduce bleeding. I had a transvaginal ultrascan mid September. Still waiting for results and due to speak to my GP on Wednesday. I came home today to find an NHS letter for a hysteroscopy appointment on Friday, which made me panic.

I know this is all sensible procedure/investigation into what is causing my heavy bleeding, and I am pleased they are taking things seriously, but I am feeling quite scared.

Please can anyone comment - have you undergone this procedure? Any advice/tips?

What are the possible outcomes/findings for this?

I am thinking they will be looking to take a sample from inside my womb for analysis, is that right?

    I had very heavy bleeding in 2019 - spontaneous and very clotty, If that makes sense, had an ultrasound that discovered the womb lining was over what it should be, I was tired all the time with it with terrible back pain.

    I was referred for hysteroscopy. You sit back in a chair with legs in stirrups- a bit daunting but glad I went through with it as I couldn't cope with the pain, non stop bleeding and fatigue.

    They first do an ultrasound and check ovaries, fallopian tubes etc and they talk you through it.

    Your whole womb can be seen on a screen so nothing is missed.

    The biopsies were taken - it did hurt with each prod but it doesn't last, I was told it was nice and pink and it looked healthy and then I was given the Mirena coil to reduce the lining.

    Two days later I had discomfort so don't do anything strenuous, take it easy to recover and pain killers.

    I no longer have back or cramp pain and the bleeding stopped within 6 weeks.

    Thankyou so much for your kind words, I am hoping to speak with my GP tomorrow to find out more. 

    It really helps to know that other people have been through this and managed to get some answers.

    I have this procedure and a Morena coil inserted at same time. .ask the consultant for pain relief ...you can get local anestethic or gas and air if you feel uncomfortable

    Thankyou - I have an update as I was able to speak to my GP earlier. SHe told me that the transvaginal ultrasound showed that I have a small growth inside my womb. It is not a fibroid, but it might be a polyp. She says the only way that they can tell is by looking via the Hysteroscopy. If it is possible to remove it at the same time, they will do this.

    I am still concerned that the procedure won't work, but it is worth a try. If they can't do it, I might need to go back under general anaesthetic. 

    My GP has kindly prescribed me some Diazepam to help before/during the procedure. Again, it's worth a try (my partner will do the driving to and from appointment!)

    She explained that a tiny polyp can cause the symptoms that I have been experiencing, becuase the body recognises it as a "foreign body" and tries to get rid of it with the cramping and bleeding. That would make sense. 

    Naturally, I am still concerned about the growth/polyp and if it is dangerous. If they remove it, they will do a biopsy, or if they can take a sample of cells they might do that too/instead I don't know.

    A quick update for anyone following this thread - I attended for the Hysteroscopy procedure on Friday but unfortunately it did not work out for me. I had spoken with my GP (see previous post) and took 5mg Diazempam the night before and same that morning as directed. The Consultant and everyone were lovely and explained everything to me before and during.

    I managed to get as far as the local anaesthetic and I had gas and air but I found the procedure too painful and had to ask them to stop. I really, really tried to keep breathing and persevere but it did not go to plan. I don't want to frighten anyone on here at all, many people manage this procedure fine and with no issues. 

    Please note - It is important to know that you can say "stop" at any time and they have to go with this.

    Unfortunately now I have to go on the waiting list for the same procedure but under general anaesthetic. I reckon it could take 3-6 months at least. I know it's not an emergency but I am disappointed that I wasn't able to have it confirmed what the polyp/growth was and have any biopsy taken.

    So, more medication to control the pain and bleeding until then. . .

    I feel for you. I had a hysteroscopy a few years ago and found it extremely painful. I did get through it and thought I was a wuss until I then read an article about lots of women experiencing the same. It was the thought of having to have a GA that got me to the end of the procedure.
