Extremely long bleed with blood clots

Hello ladies, lm in need of some advice please

Im 39 years old and l've always had regular periods, usually a 28day cycle give or take a day or 2. In August l missed a period, very unusual for me and has never happened  before. As we are trying for a baby we got our hopes up, all pregnancy tests were negative though. We booked in for a private scan, a transvaginal ultrasound and l was told my endometrial lining was very thick at 20mm (either as result of a late period or pregnancy), l was told it wasn't a cause for concern as it was an echogenic thickened endometrium with no internal vascularity seen also no cysts, fibroids etc were seen. I waited again for a week and still no positive pregnancy test. I started bleeding on my period due date the month after, so l missed a complete cycle and had a period 2 months apart. It's a strange period, 4 days of spotting followed by 10days of a medium type bleed and then followed by a currently ongoing day 14 of a very heavy  blood clot bleed. So in total l have now been bleeding for around 4weeks. I have spoken to my GP and they have said it is most likely because l have missed a cycle so my uterine lining is very thick and now is all shedding. They would like me to wait and see and for it to stop naturally. My bloods have all come back as normal and l am not perimenopausal.

My question is please can someone advise please as l am really worried now

1) if there was any cancer present for example even cervical cancer would this have been detected in the transvaginal ultrasound?

2) can  a missed period cause such a long and heavy blood clot period?

Please respond with any information and thank you x

  • Hello Star1

I'm sorry to hear about the health concerns that you've been dealing with over the past few months and that you're worried about what may be causing them.

It's good to hear that the scan and blood tests that you've had to date haven't given any immediate cause for concern.

Please do get back in touch with your GP if you're still experiencing problems or have any concerns or questions. they will be best placed to help with answers and arrange any necessary follow-up that may be needed.

I do hope that things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is stressful and tiring. I have had something similar over the past few months and my GP has been very supportive. After the initial scan my GP gave me hormone tablets (norethisterone) that stopped the period. It was such a relief!  I had similar results on the scan although they felt that for the stage in my cycle my endometrial lining was too thick. I was then referred to gynaecology for a hysterscope which I was quite anxious about but which turned out to be ok (I wouldn't want one unnecessarily but it was not as painful as I had feared). They found lots of polyps which had not shown up on the scan and took a few biopsies. The histology came back clear and I have another procedure booked to remove the remaining polyps. I will also have a mirena coil fitted at the same time although if you are planning to get pregnant you will not want this I guess.

It is definitely worth going back to your GP. It may not be anything serious but it might need further investigation and having a heavy, ongoing period really impacts on your quality of life. At its worst I felt as though I could not leave the house as I was flooding every day.

I hope everything settles down soon for you. As much as we try to rationalise things it can be a worrying time.

    Take care
