Cervix biopsy

So my daughter had hpv positive and borderline abnormal cells. She went for her colposcopy today feeling positive but left upset. They put the test solution on her cervix and all the white areas showed up. They then said they need to take 2 biopsies. Now we are thinking the worst at 24yrs old this should not be happening. They said we will hear in a few weeks. When i looked it up then that soon is bad news. Im beside myself with worry. 2 yr ago she got investigated because of pain and abnormal bleeding. They flat out refused a smear. It makes me so angry

  • No advice as I'm waiting on tests myself and don't really understand any of it either, but didn't want to read and run. In book most doctors are rubbish and won't do the most simple of tests for anything (long story). But my mum had abnormal smear years ago they did laser surgery on her cervix and she hasn't had any problems since. Hopefully it will be something they can treat easily like her xx

  • Well the nurse who done the biopsy mentio ed maybe part of her cervix removed. When i read that it is only when it is actually cancer. I cannot cope but putting a brave face on for my daughter

  • Hi Tracey

i think you need to stop with google and frightening yourself! Abnormal cells, which are NOT cancer are removed from the cervix very routinely. A smear test is not to test for cervical cancer-it is to screen for abnormal cells which can be removed long before they ever become cancer. Reading stories about cervix removal is bound to frighten you. There is a type of surgery which can be done for early stage cervical cancer called a trachelectomy which involves removing the cervix, but this is not done for abnormal cells. Abnormal cell removal is done via a procedure called a lletz which removes the cells by taking a layer of tissue from the cervix via an electrical wire, and it’s also possible in some cases that a cone biopsy may be required which removes a cone shaped portion of the cervix. But you need to know biopsy results before thinking of anything beyond what has already been established-which is abnormal cells and not cancer at this stage.

  • Just makes me mad as she had symptoms that started nearly 2yr ago and they flat out refused a smear. Now after her 1st one hpv, abnormal cells which now after the colposcopy is worse than 1st thought so 2 biopsies taken. Nearly 2yr ago they could have caught this. I cannot help but fear the worst after it has sat this long. Its breaking me i dont know how much more i can take in my life losing my mam, my dad and my brother NOW my only daughter. If anything happens i know i wont cope.

  • A smear is not a test for cervical cancer-it is a screening for abnormal cells. But if your daughter was having the symptoms you describe, then those should have been investigated at the time.

The abnormal cells may well be of a higher grade than originally suspected-this is common, but STILL doesn’t mean your daughter has cancer. It seems you are already assuming that you will lose her, and Im sorry you are feeling so anxious. That does not happen with a precancerous condition. Even if she were unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with cervical cancer, the treatment is very effective.

I was diagnosed with this cancer more than 3 years ago and successfully treated. Please try and look on the side of positives-there has been no cancer diagnosis yet and may never be. I hope you will be able to support your daughter through this, and know that until the results of biopsies are known, you shouldn’t make any assumptions based on what you read on the internet.

  • Thank you for your kind words x

  • My daughter has received a letter saying they suspect cin2 and waiting for biopsy to confirm this and route of treatment. Still upsetting but atleast not actual cancer so they think

  • Hi Tracey

I’m glad to hear that CIN2 is the likely outcome since it’s not cancer. Hopefully the biopsy will confirm and your daughter can just have the cells removed and put this behind her.

  • Biopsy results come back as low grade cin1. Bit because there are discrepancies as the colposcopist says cin2 there will be and mdt meeting on 27th of this month to discuss what should be done. Huge relief

  • That is a big relief indeed! It is possible to have more than 1 level of CIN at the same time, and the biopsy is only taking a small sample so it’s normal for the discrepancy to be discussed at the MDT. I hope you can both relax now!
