Urgent Mole Referral

Hi,

Last week I was given a 2 week urgent referral by my GP to the hospital as I have a mole on my back that fits all the 'ABCDE' rules. I have bad anxiety and I am fearing the worst. I found a picture of my back from almost 3 years ago and the mole does look different back then. I have no idea when it could have possibly changed and am wondering if within this time frame if it could still be benign or at least pre-cancerous or whether it definitely points in the direction of cancer?

Many thanks

  • Hi,

There is a always a chance it may be benign or dysplastic (pre cancerous). Only 5% of patients seen by dermatology are diagnosed with melanoma whilst 20% are pre cancerous. They may want to remove the mole for a biopsy so don't panic, there is still a chance it will come back benign. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

  • Thank you AngieT for your speedy response.

My appointment is a week from now so I am just trying to remain positive about this entire situation. Thank you again, your response is greatly appreciated.
