Does a clear neck ultrasound mean definitely not lymphoma?

I had my neck ultrasound today, due to a widened mediastinum on a recent chest x ray (referred for x ray due to shortness of breath, chest pain & brassy cough).

My thyroid looks good which is great. I have an enlarged node (I think that's what he called it) under the left side of my jaw, but he said this could be from a dental filling last year. He was very positive.

I am a bit concerned still, as the referring Dr said that if the ultrasound of my thyroid & neck was ok, she would send for a CT scan to check my lymph nodes. I'm not sure if she will though now given how positive the ultrasound tech was.

Has anyone had this please? Or does this scan mean all is ok?

Thank you, Stacey

  • Hello SB28

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some ongoing health concerns. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things. It's good to hear that the results from your ultrasound didn't raise any concerns. Try to take this as a positive sign and keep your focus on that.

It's good to hear that the referring Dr had previously said they would arrange some further investigations if the ultrasound didn't give any answers. It sounds as if they're being very thorough in trying to get to the bottom of your health concerns. It may be that you want to get in touch with them next week and see if the referral for the additional CT scan has been arranged. that way you will know what the next steps are.

In the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information, and support that they can.

I do hope you have some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for your message Jenn. Quick update -  The dr referred to respiratory consultant, who requested a contrast CT to check for lymphoma/mediastinal mass. I had this on Monday & got upto a 3 week wait for results - so nervous. Thanks again :)

  • Hiya.  Have you been to the dentist to get your tooth checked? Dental issues can most definitely cause lymph node enlargement in and around the jaw and neck. A tooth doesn't always have to hurt for there to be a wee infection or an issue.

Stuff like abscesses don't always hurt if they're draining. The pain from those usually occurs when that infection has nowhere to drain.

  • Thanks for your message. Yes I went to my dentist & tooth is fine :)
