Light red breast and Thickening

Hi

I'm absolutely terrified and need some advice on how to proceed.

I am 5 months pregnant and my left breast recently went a light pink/red colour around a large portion. In addition to this my pores looked really large and obvious and the skin didn't feel right.

Went to GP who said it was all fine just hormones. Wasn't happy so went to another GP who referred me to the breast clinic. They saw me and said it didn't look too bad but sent me for an ultrasound. The ultrasound came back normal however confirmed breast thickening. Went back to clinic and they just said it was nothing sinister and that it was probably hormone related and inflamed. No infection is suspected and no reason for the inflammation was given.

I just feel that there is still a risk of inflammatory breast cancer and they haven't ruled it out. I cant understand why no biopsy or mammogram has been done if breast thickening and redness is confirmed?

Should I try get seen again...I'm not sure what to do??

  • Hello Dungeonslady

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some breast changes. It's not uncommon for women to experience changes during pregnancy but it's understandable that you're feeling concerned.

It's good to know that you were seen at breast clinic and that they didn't have any concerns. Women under the age of 40 aren't typically offered a mammogram as younger women have more dense breast tissue which can make it difficult for changes to be seen. This is probably why you had an ultrasound and indeed many women who do have a mammogram then go on to have an ultrasound so that the specialist can see things in more detail.

Do get back in touch with your GP to see if they can help with some treatment to help manage the inflammation.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our team of nurses for some support and advice you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
