Called back for 2nd biopsy in 6 weeks!

Hi everyone, looking for some reassurance that this is "normal"

9 days ago I had a breast biopsy and was just rung to be told that the sample was "insufficient" and I need to return in 6 weeks for further examination. The lady on the phone tried to reassure me by saying the cells that they did get are ok/must be ok and that the long wait to do another is to give my breast/the lump time to settle after the first one. Seeing as it didn't feel sore at all after it was done, I'm wondering if that really is the reason.

I don't really know what to think, all I can think right now is how on earth will I get through another 6 weeks not knowing? My husband who suffers badly with anxiety is in absolute bits and begging me to see if I can be seen privately. Would a private hospital see me any quicker or is this 7 week wait (as I had it done a week ago) standard practice??

Thank you in advance.

  • Hi there, hoping someone else can help you with the 'insufficient' bit, as I have no experience of that.  It does seem from what people are posting that the whole timescale has gone a bit crazy and is delayed.  I'm waiting for a second biopsy, but it's to look for something else not on same lump - but my consultant told me I would not be seeing him for results for circa six weeks - although my stereotactic biopsy should be end of this week but I've heard nothing yet xx

couldn't hurt to explore private if you can xx be kind to yourself - very stressful time xx

  • When I had my biopsy I was told there were 3 possible results.  Benign,  cancer or  that sometimes they couldn't get all the information from the original sample and would need more tissue. The wait for the repeat biopsy is to let everything settle down because there is a lot of internal bruising that can make it difficult to see the area they want to look at.
