Urgent mole referral

My son has a mole on his face which he thought had changed so he went to GP on Friday.

He had been in December with a different lesion on his arm which the GP looked through the scope and  said wasn't a mole, it was blood vessels. She also looked at the other moles on his arm.

On Friday a new GP looked at these moles on his arm, after his face, picked one out and referred him on a 2 week referral.

I have gone into panic mode. This mole hasn't changed at all, surely the doctor would have picked it out in December?

Is it common to get a 2 week referral on moles? He's fair skinned with quite a few moles.

Thank you

  • Hi,

Please try not to panic. The mole could have subtly changed in the last few months. If the GP checked it with a dermascope they may think the cells appear to have changed. If they looked with the naked eye they may be more cautious than the previous GP. There is still a very good chance it's fine but it's always best for the dermatologist to check it because the GP isn't an expert. Good luck and please let us know how your son gets on,

  • Thank you Angie for your response.

I just hope this new GP is keen and thorough because my son said she was very young. It's good she's referred him.

  • Hi Angie

Just an update on my son. He had his appointment with the dermatologist on the Wednesday after seeing the GP on the Friday, amazing NHS.

He was checked by 2 doctors using the dermascope. They both said nothing to worry about, mentioned something about a fried egg and gave him an open appointment for 6 months if he has any more concerns.

I just wanted people to know that even though an urgent referral is made it doesn't mean it's always serious so try not to panic. I was a wreck for a few days!

  • That's wonderful news Sonya. So pleased that all is fine and it's good that your son has an open appointment which will help him feel much better. Thank you for updating us as it helps show all those going through the same worries that it isn't always bad news. Best wishes to you both xx
