Hello this is my first time posting so sorry if its in wrong place  I just had a baby 5 weeks ago and found a mole about 3 to 4 weeks ago my 3rd toe on left foot it's small not big dont no one it's from that or its from from suntan on my feet not really out in the sun that much only got it because was walking with boyfriend when pregnant to shopping and was out in the son about 3 weeks ago again because we went to the zoo  really worried that it might be skin cancer doctor looked at it and had said that it did look like it had uneven borders but qhen I showed her on camera as it was a video call she said it looks like a normal mole and not to worry told her I have anxiety about all this and she then referred me to dermatology to get it check just for my anxiety my appointment is on the 4th of October im really scared that it is something and that I'm going to die my boyfriend has looked at it and said it looks fine and not to worry that it's gonna be ok I'm still so scared tho anyone had this happen to them on there toe and it xome out all fine

  • Hi,

I know it's worrying but please try and not stress out about this.

It's normal for new moles to appear at any time although once passed 40 they are treated more suspiciously. Moles can also appear or change during or after pregnancy due to hormonal changes. A sun tan over the last year wouldn't cause melanoma to occur that quickly - it's usually due to sun damage many years before, especially during childhood. So there is every chance that your mole is fine but it's good that it's getting checked out.

The dermatologist will check it with a dermascope which shows any unusual cell activity. If it looks fine you will be discharged. If they aren't sure they will arrange for it to be removed for biopsy. Most people get clear results. If it is malignant it doesn't mean you are going to die. After full removal and a period of monitoring 95% of melanoma patients are discharged and never have any further problems so please don't panic.

Good luck at your appointment and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank u so much Angie for getting bk to me yes my boyfriend has said the same thing not to worrie just having a baby tho hard to because mind goes to he won't have a mommy I no that I'm being silly and it's just my anxiety just really wierd place for a mole to be and googling doesn't help the situation at all still haven't learned tho I'm trying my best for this to not affect my mental health just going to wait untill my appointment and hope everything comes bk fine I was going to put a picture of it on here but not sure on how to do that sorry and sorry for my little panic status just worried sorry

  • Please don't apologis, we've all panicked in the same way. Google doesn't help, it just fuels anxiety. Information about melanoma is out of date and the images don't help as everyone's melanoma looks different. Terms and conditions on the forum don't allow photos to be posted because no one, not even the nurses, can tell if a mole looks suspicious. The dermatologist is the expert and you don't have long to wait so try put it to the back of your mind for now. Also, although moles on the toes aren't common, it doesn't naturally mean they are a problem. People can get moles in some very unusual places yet they are perfectly harmless. So stay away from Google and leave it to the professionals.

  • Yeah that's what I'm doing now staying off google really doesn't help situation and I didn't no that about pictures sorry and its only small not even the size of a pencil eraser so not gonna worry no more just gonna do what u said thanks so much Angie I do feel alot better now

  • So just a little update my appointment has been moved to Tuesday next week and now I'm having so much anxiety about this all just feel like it's gonna be bad news I don't no how to make my mind calm down my body has been feeling so wierd my neck has been hurting me and been having headaches I'm so worried that it is skin cancer and that it has gone to my lympnodes as I have found a small lump just below my neck where my chest is I think I'm just making my mind even worse thinking about it I don't no what to do feel so lost at the minute I just am praying everything is OK

  • Hi,

I'm sorry to hear your appointment has been delayed and it's causing further anxiety. Please know that your headaches, neck and small lump are very, very unlikely to be connected to the mole on your toe. The headaches and sore neck are more likely due to the stress and anxiety. The small lump can be due to several causes but very unlikely a swollen node due to the spread of melanoma. Should your mole be malignant, any spread would occur to the node(s) behind the knee or in the groin. The lymphatic and blood systems carry lymph and blood up towards the heart so it wouldn't go to the neck/chest area. Don't prod and poke the lump as this will make it swell. If it's still there at your appointment point it out so they can check it - I'm sure they will put your mind at rest. Keep your mind focused on other things and try to relax - perhaps a head, neck and shoulder massage will help the stress - it always works for me xx

  • Thank u so much for getting back to me I really appreciate it and I feel alot better now u said it wouldn't go to my neck or chest I haven't found any lumps behind knee or groin erea so I'm happy about that I think because I no its there I have made it worse by poking it constant checking it like u said I'm more relaxed a bit now tho so hopefully I can just ignore it untill Tuesday thank u so much for ur help with my ramblings

  • Hi angie I'm really worried went to toilet today and a scab come off the mole and when I touch my toe it feels wierd does that mean that it is cancer and ita spreading or could it be nothing

  • Hi,

If a scab has fallen off had it bled and then scabbed? If so, it may be that you've unknowingly knocked it. Of itself it's not necessarily a sign of anything suspicious and a malignant mole doesn't usually feel weird or hurt. xx

  • Thanks for getting back to me angie  no no bleeding at all just a scab didn't even know there was one there untillni checked to see if mole was raised n then the scab came off started freaking out the mole is small so hoping if it is malignant that we found it early xx
