Dad has a shadow in his lungs

So it was only yesterday that I was told my dad had an X-ray and they found a shadow in his lungs, he had been suffering from very bad back pains which made him go to the doctor, he's had his further scans today and we are waiting until Monday for the results. I'm honestly feeling my worst right now, I can't even think what it would be like to ever lose him. We're hoping it's not cancer but the days are going by so slow and I just want to know quickly!! My dad has been a smoker for 40 years if that helps. What would this most likely be? Is it most likely to be cancer or is it likely to just be something harmless?

  • No one on this forum can predict what it will be, we've all been through the waiting, what if it's this or what if its that, none of us know until its confirmed by the results of x rays and tests.  Shadows on lungs can be other things apart from cancer, chest infection, pneumonia, my husband has lung cancer but never had any pain in his back or chest, just a cough, he has stage 4 and even now doesn't have pain and he has a 6cm tumour, so pain is not a sign of cancer.  A long weekend ahead of you but you will all know soon.  My best wishes and I hope all goes well for your Dad.   Carol
