Biopsy results back but need consultation to discuss them?

Hi 3 weeks ago I had a breast biopsy and finding a small pea sized lump.

I called the hospital on Monday to be told results are Back but my consultant won't have them until Thursday (marking 3 weeks since biopsy) so I called Thursday to br told the Dr is reviewing them. Called again today and was told o needed to come in for a consultation next Thursday (4 weeks since biopsy) - I asked the receptionist should I be worried and she said the consultant said to tell me the results are reassuring....

what does that mean? Could they not have said you don't have cancer but you still need to come in?

  • Hi Kkdolly,

I am sorry to hear that you have had to wait so long for your results. It is normal to have to wait a day or two after they are returned to your consultant, as s/he will always hold a multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT) to discuss your case and decide upon any treatment if necessary.

Most consultants prefer to give the news face-to-face, regardless of whether it is good or bad. I do hope that all turns out well for you.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank You,

I am very fortunate that I have private health care as a perk of my husbands work. The results would have been with the consultant for at least 10 days before I get them which is worrying me.

I am assuming this is because he only works in the private hospital for 1 day per week.

Do the results come back and need to be discussed for all positive and negative cases.

I came off the telephone confident but the more I think on it I am thinking are the actually positive but he's reassured it's a new cancer that can be cut out. Why not just say there isn't cancer but we still need to have a consultation.

    Hi Kaye,

Prior to Covid it was unusual for any results to be given via telephone, as most consultants prefer to give them to the patient personally. Staff are not allowed to disclose any results unless they have been given permission from the consultant to do so.

Most consultants work in both NHS and private hospitals, so if your consultant is not in the private hospital very often, this could be the reason for the delay. As far as I am aware, all cases will be discussed at MDT's, especially if there have been any tests done.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • If the consultant gave the receptionist permission to say the results are reassuring, that is a very good sign.  They would never disclose information like this lightly.  The consultant will want to discuss the findings and what they plan to do.  Whatever it is, it doesn't sound serious from what the receptionist said.
