Inflamed cervix waiting on referral and terrified

Hello

I gave birth 5 weeks ago. While I was 8 months pregnant they did an internal and said my cervix looked inflamed.

ive been to the GP to follow up and been referred to gynaecology for a colposcopy and I'm so scared. The GP said it could likely be a large Cervical Ectropic but there is a small chance it could be the C.

I had a smear 2 years ago which showed no HPV or abnormal cells and I've also had the HPV vaccine. However my anxiety is so so high and I'm so scared I won't be around to see my little boy grow up.

Has anyone had anything similar and could provide any reassurance?

  • Hello yorkshirelass12,

Welcome to Cancer Chat! It's good you have been referred to be seen and I hope they find out soon what has caused this inflamed cervix. There is information on the colposcopy on this page which I hope you will find useful. Try not to be scared as there are so many things it could be. It's good news that your smear 2 years ago showed no HPV or abnormal cells so try not to worry too much. I hope you won't need to wait too long for your appointment.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello Yorkshirelass,

I read your post and wanted to try and help. I have never had any children, so I can only imagine that it must impact your body and systems for some time after giving birth. Maybe that is enough to cause inflamation of the cervix, or a secondary infection?

I think the GP is doing the right thing by ordering the scans to check inside from different places/angles. This should give them more information to make any diagnosis or if they need to do any other tests. It might be that they don't find anything but want to check you again in a month or so to see if the inflamation has reduced.

I had to get a transvaginal ultrasound recently and I was really anxious, but then I realised that it is the only way that they can properly "see" what is going on inside. I suppose to healthcare professionals these tests are fairly routine, but it always seems frightening for us patients.

I hope you get the tests and results back soon to know more,

Also, people on this forum will help who have maybe experienced a similar situation. It is natural to feel anxious and even more so as a new parent.
