enlarged lymph nodes for 6 years

hi! i'm kind of helping posting here will ease my anxiety.

backstory - when i was 15 and in the midst of doing my gcse's (2015) a hard fixed lump appeared behind my left ear. i was very depressed at this time so didnt care to see a doctor.

a few years later, i started getting more. one on the left side at the back of my neck, then one on the back of my right shoulder. they swelled at first due to infection - i assume - as they were tender and painful. when the infection was over they stopped hurting but never went down fully and remained hard and fixed.

at this point i finally went to my doctor as i was getting meds for my anxiety, he had a feel and said sometimes lymph nodes just dont go down after infection. so i left it at that and soon after this appointment got my meningitis jab (i was 19 i believe). after i got my meningitis jab, it made a lymph node on my collarbone and a lymph node on the right side of my neck swell up and the same thing happened, they never went down fully.

i saw the same doctor again about a month later while i was having my check up for my ssri's. he said he didnt know what it was and asked me what i thought it was? i didn't know how i was supposed to know what it was since i'm not the doctor here lol. i'm now 22 and think a lymph node in my arm pit may be acting the same but is harder to tell.

i'm going to the doctor again soon and demanding a biopsy as this has been making me sick with anxiety for years. i have no idea what could be wrong with me other than indolent lymphoma. the nodes do seem to go up and down in size every now and then too. i've not heard of an autoimmne disease acting like this so how can i do anything but assume the worst? i've also had quite bad fatigue since i was a teen too, i sleep 12 hours most nights and get the odd day where even brushing my teeth and showering is labour intensive. very different to mental illness fatigue. (but i was diagnosed with post-viral ME when i was a kid so always put it down to that even though i almost fully recovered until my teens).

i'm also worried that if i DO have cancer, the outlook might be worse because i didn't get tests done years ago. has anyone else experienced the same??

  • Hi Roomonfire2003 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm very sorry for the worry and stress these lymph nodes have been causing but I hope it helps to know that many of our members have contended with similar so you're not alone and hopefully you'll receive some support and advice from them soon.

In the meantime, I hope your next doctors appointment goes well and you're able to get referred for a biopsy. If it helps, we have some tips and advice on getting the most out of a GP appointment on our website.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • thank you for the reply! fingers crossed everything goes ok

  • Hi, I seem to go through phases where I start worrying about these lymph nodes every now n again, now is that time again

I first noticed these lymph nodes under my jaw when I was about 14ish but just disregarded them cos I didn't think anything of it. Year or 2 later and I noticed them in my groin neck and armpits. Never really looked into it again or bothered seeing a doctor though as it doesn't bother me and I don't experience any other symptoms whatsoever. I'm now 18 and the nodes haven't grown or anything either. I've noticed the odd one in my abdomen recently (past few months) but never get round to looking into it, I'm too laid back for my own good sometimes. Probably worth seeing a doctor tbf, any ideas on what it could be ?

  • hi! i finally got an appt. today and am having a blood test for in just under two weeks and hopefully an ultrasound too, but the doctor was very dismissive and not worried other than that even tho i have other symptoms like my fatigue lol (v annoying)

i'd say it's worth getting some tests done! i've done so much research thanks to my health anxiety and it's not often the worse case scenario, a lot of people have benign problems with their immune system that can cause these things, but as always is best to get checked just in case

hope everything is/will be fine with you! thanks for the reply - helps knowing a lot of people are having similar problems to me haha

  • Yeah thanks for the reply, thing is I've had them for that long so I'd of thought if it was anything serious it would've probably caused more problems by now, not the best way to look at it but I'll try get a test booked to look into it properly. Always fear for the worst when thinking about what the doctor will say though hahaha.

Anyway, hope everything is good on your end and keep me updated ! :)

  • yeah i think most of the time its nothing to worry about so i hope it goes okay for u! keep me updated!

sorry for the very late response, my appointment didnt go well that day. the doctor said he wasnt worried since its been six years since my first node swelled but said he'd book me to get some bloods done and an ultrasound (told me to tell the receptionist, when she couldnt actually book me for the ultrasound and said she would tell him to.) my first blood test turned up saying im severely iron deficient so i now have iron pills for the anemia and they took another test but haven't heard about that so presume nothing came up! the anemia could explain some of my fatigue but ive been taking the iron for 2 weeks now and still dont feel much better :/

the other day i got a new lymph node swelling up which i hadnt had before, and today the one in the back of my neck swelled up again. i'm tired of it spreading to new nodes lol, very concerning. i saw a different doctor about some mental health issues and he was much nicer and actually listened to me so i'm booking another appointment with him and actually asking for a biopsy because i'm sick of not being taken seriously! i'm scared that if it IS low grade lymphoma then it'll be too far gone when i could have gotten treatment for it long ago if people actually listened to me :(
