High risk and low risk HPV - can you have both?

Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help me because I'm worrying so much.
A couple months ago I noticed some genital warts which I am awaiting treatment for and I'm aware these are caused by low risk HPV. However, I just got my smear results back and I've also tested positive to high risk HPV. Is it possible to have two strains at once and does it make the situation worse?
Thanks

  • Hi there

Yes, it’s very possible to have multiple strains of HPV at the same time, both low and high risk. The strains which can cause changes to cervical cells are not the same as those which cause genital warts, and If you haven’t had abnormal cells identified, then your high risk HPV strain(s) are not causing any issues for you, which is a good thing! The genital warts can be treated and it does not make the situation worse in relation to your cervix.
