Small pericolic lymph nodes seen on colon CT scan

Feeling stressed beyond belief! Was hospitalized last week with diverticulitis, severe rectal bleed came out of the blue! Got a CT scan with contrast and prescribed antibiotics. Was discharged and told by ER Dr that it was uncomplicated diverticulitis. Everything else looks fine.

However I then passed out at the pharmacy and they took me back to ER and I ended up admitted for 4 days for transfusion and IV antibiotics.

Anyway, I'll get to the point! I am seeing the GI Dr for a colonoscopy in 6 weeks. But meantime I read my CT scan and it mentioned "small associated pericolic lymph nodes". And Dr Google says they are much more likely to appear in colon cancer than in diverticulitis. I had no symptoms before the diver flare (I know I had diver thanks to previous scan) and had no reason to suspect anything nasty. Now I'm unable to sleep or eat.

But surely if it was a sign of cancer, they would not have discharged me from the ER? Surely the surgeon I saw in GI ward would have mentioned it? He was very nice and when I asked if there was anything suspicious in my scan he said no. But I wonder if they just say that till the colonoscopy?

Please can anyone help me?

  • Hello Scottishmuppet and welcome to Cancer Chat,

Poor you, what a stressful time you have had! Having to go to the ER twice must have been a rather distressing experience and I am sorry to hear that you ended up being admitted for four days and needed a transfusion and antibiotics.

I hope that the colonoscopy goes well and that it confirms that it is diverticulitis. Keep well away from Dr Google as it is known not to be reliable so reading things like this online will only make you feel more worried. The best thing to do while you are waiting to have your colonoscopy is to keep busy and focused on other things and to resist the urge to go back to Google while you are understandably in search for answers.  I hope that doing this will improve your quality of life and that you regain your appetite and manage to get some sleep.

It's definitely reassuring that the surgeon you spoke to mentioned that there was nothing suspicious on your scan. Obviously you will only get definite answers once you have had the colonoscopy and I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

There are some useful tips on this page on how to cope while waiting for important news as I know the long wait and uncertainty can be the hardest thing to deal with.

Hopefully you will hear from others on the forum who have been in a similar situation before and I hope that they will come and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
