Possibly bowel cancer?

Hi I'm 17 years old and I have some worrying symptoms of bowel cancer for about a year now, I've had these cuts (anal fissures?) that I can see starting from near my anus to near my lower back two of these cuts have recently developed and the one closest to my lower back has a lump or skin tag just beside it I've only just done some research now because I didn't understand the severity of this, it says I have secondary anal fissures which are multiple painless cuts but I just want to be sure it's not cancerous, I guess I could say I've got constipation but it's not really a struggle for me too poo I feel no pain I just see these cuts or tears could this be bowel cancer?

  • It is highly unlikely that that would be bowel cancer, especially at your age. Bowel cancer is more common the older you get. And I don't think cuts or tears would be a common symptom of bowel cancer, though I am no expert. It might be worth seeing your doctor to see what could be causing them and if they can do anything to relieve them, but I would be very surprised if it were anything as serious as cancer.

  • Appreciate your time to reply, and I will take on your advice many thanks.

  • Well, I'm no expert or anything, but I did have a bowel cancer scare myself recently and the specialist said that at my age - 40 - it was unlikely to be bowel cancer, that it would be a concern if somebody my parents' age came in with the symptoms I had but that at my age, the risk was less than 1%. And my symptoms were rectal bleeding, weight loss and possible changes in bowel habit so more than you have.

I think something like 99% of cases are in over 40s and I think the majority of cases would also have at least one of the symptoms of rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit (diarrhea for example), pain in the stomach, weight loss or thin stools.

  • Heya, I don't want to say it probably isn't cus I was 18 when I started getting symptoms and I was constantly told by doctors I was too young. Well it was and it took me 3 years to get diagnosed. I beat it and then got diagnosed again a year later. I'm only 23! I think your best bet is just go to your doctor. It's probably something minor but if it's worrying you enough it's still worth a visit and keep going back until your issues been delt with. If it helps at all, everyone's different but my first symptoms where back pain, constipation, passing blood, stomach pain and unexplained weight loss. Good luck x

  • Appreciate your time to reply, I will definitely take your advice thanks.
