Upper GI 2ww

Anxiously awaiting my 2 week wait Endoscopy. A contrast CT picked up a thickened oesophageal wall when they were checking for clots in my lungs (thankfully negative on that front!).

Currently have problems swallowing both hard and soft solids and it's extremely painful swallowing fluids too. Also have constant heartburn and quit smoking 10 years ago. I know at 29 it's probably highly unlikely to be cancer, but this combined with sudden weight loss of a stone in 2 and half weeks, is stressing me right out.

Any tips on coping until my appointment comes through.

  • Hallo Leo25Daisy,  I saw you've posted over on the Oesophageal cancer thread, started by RayB.   You must be worried with all your symptoms, but as you say thank goodness no clots on lungs.   It is good you're going for an endoscopy soon.   Tips on coping, that is a tough one.   It is my husband who had to go for an endoscopy, not me.   I would say I felt like a rabbit caught in the headlights and that is me just an onlooker.   I spent a long time looking online at research papers, forums etc etc.  Looking for answers, but never seemed to find the answers I wanted to find.   So I wouldn't recommend that course of action.  My husband said we just have to wait, kick the can down the road, and get through each test, scan and consultation one at a time.   Try not to look too far ahead.   Get used to each stage and thing you are told.   Ask for help, emotional support and advice from MacMillan if you are worried about cancer.   I will be thinking about you and hoping for the very best outcome possible for you.   Please let us know how everything goes.

  • Hiya Sally,

Thank you! I feel like working in a hospital makes it so much worse because you know all the pathways, but as I work in gynae the consultants I come into contact with aren't much help. Though that said one of them was lovely when she caught me crying over having a 2 week wait referral saying that I just have to remember it's a way of being seen sooner.

I've been trying to avoid Google as much as possible because I know I'll scare myself silly, but its harder when you're up at night.

My GP has been fab with keeping me informed though, and my old boss works for the cancer bureau now so she's told me my referral is now on the waiting list and I just need to wait for the Endoscopy waiting list manager to contact me and that cmy referral has been graded as 2 week wait 1b urgent, but as I only handle routine referrals in my day to day job I have no clue what that 1b means.

Hopefully the Endoscopy will also show why I've been coughing up blood daily for the last 5 months. That was why they originally did a bronchoscopy and ct scan searching for clots, as there's close family history of them x
