1st smear test results - abnormal cell changes. Worried

Hi,

I have recently had my results which shows abnormal boarder line cell changes, it was my first smear I'm just so worried as I've been referred for colposcopy..

any advice would be really helpful

thanks

  • Hi,

i had exactly the same letter HPV Positve and boarderline changes and completely freaked out and cried.

i called my doctor for some information and they advised boardline changes is so common and does not mean cervical cancer at all.

I attended my colposcopy appointment at the hospital and they explained why I was invited for the procedure. They advised boarderline changes is nothing to worry about and that they just need to double check these things to ensure nothing is being missed.

The procedure didn't hurt no more than a smear kinda pain. Half way through they took biopsies from me from an area that looked suspicious . They numb you for the biopsies you feel a pinch for like 2 Seconds. This instantly made me think the worse and begin to cry my eyes out.

after the colposcopy they explained they had seen an area that looked like it may need some treatment and will await the biopsy results from the lab to confirm.

Within 10 days I had my results and it was the longest 10 days I had ever felt. My results confirmed CIN1 and was advised this is very common and should return to normal on its own with no treatment needed. I was told to have a smear in a years time to check they had gone back to normal.

so please please don't do what I did and freak out CIN is not cancer and i was told it can take years to develop into anything if it ever does. I think because you test HPV positive they instantly check you for boardline changes as HPV is the main cause for cell changes that can lead onto something else. HPV is meant to clear itself over time but for some reason for some people it just doesn't and can effect the cells so they just double check it.

if there is any other questions you have feel free to ask and remember boarderline changes is exactly what it says it's only just boarderline which is small/low.

  • Hi Katie

Borderline changes are the lowest level of cell changes, and the colposcopy is simply a more detailed cervical examination which will give some more information for the doctor. It’s a simple procedure and doesn’t take long. You may just be monitored with more regular smears and not need any further treatment, or a simple removal of the cells may be recommended. Please try not to worry-these results are extremely common. .

  • Hey,

thank you so much for replying back to me, I was so so worried over thinking everything in my head!

You automatically think abnormal and cancer just comes to mind. It may sound like mad but I felt dirty and ashamed also when it said HPV positive thinking how I've been with the same partner for years!

thanks for all the advice about the colospy appointment also I was feeling very worried for that, but seeing your advice has really made me feel at ease I can't thank you enough!

    xx

  • Hey,

I know what you mean HPV made me feel like I had some kind of STI but apparently everyone has HPV at some stage in their life just sometimes our immune system doesn't clear it. It's such a common infection mostly everyone has it but it doesn't course cell changes for everyone.

I am still awaiting my smear as I am unexpectedly now expecting my first so they are unable to give me a smear. But they said not to worry and only CIN1 so having babies is fine and just to get my smear after to check it's gone away if not they can just burn the little area out .

hope all goes well for you xxxxx
