Raised CA125 levels, now referral. Help!

I'm at my wit's end a bit.  Back in June I went to see GP with problems around bloating.  They sent me for ca125 that came back at 55.  I was then referred for urgent ovarian scan which came back normal.  Doctor was still worried about my symptoms and so referred me to breast clinic and also for bowel checks. All came back normal.

She then asked me to do another ca125 which has come back slightly higher at 57.  She is now doing another urgent referral to gynaecology oncology to rule out other cancers.

I am inevitably pretty worried and just don't know what to do anymore.

Advice / thoughts / experiences would all be super welcome!!

  • Hi Ruthie

Firstly it sounds like you have a great gp with the all the referrals. I know a bit about CA125 as I am high risk for ovarian cancer. The fact you have had a scan of your ovaries and nothing could be seen is great as ovarian tumours cause bloating.  Did they scan your uterus? As elevated CA125 levels don't necessarily mean cancer. Can be fibroids, or even endometriosis which you can't tell from a scan.

let us know how you get on. It is mega stressful but do try to be positive and also that all the tests so far have been negative (in the fact they can't see an ovarian tumour, no breast or bowel issues).

  • Thanks so much for the warm wishes! I've had an appointment with the clinic today. They did a further CA125 test to see if it's raised and said that if it's still high that they will then do a CT scan. I'm a bit confused as I've already had an ultrasound that came back normal, but presumably for some reason they think they might see something on the CT scan that they can't see on the ultrasound.

It's an anxious time but I'm just trying to keep things crossed that I eventually get the all clear!
