Is a large breast mass worse than a small mass?

I'm only 18, so I know my risk of BC is very low indeed. What's worrying me most is the size and solidity of my breast mass, it must be at least 5cm.

I already have a referral in which I'm really scared about.

Examination notes say 'firm sub areola lump, no underlying or overlying structural fixation'

Overall what worries me most is how large and rock solid it is, it is not lumpy, (so not fibrocystic I don't think) and it's literally like a huge mass under the breast.

thanks for any help!'

  • Hello Lucylou02

There are no hard and fast rules about the seriousness of a lump based on its size.

I can see from your other posts that you're feeling very anxious about your upcoming appointment. What I'd say to try and keep in mind at the moment is that the majority of women seen at breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer. It's not uncommon for younger women to have lumpy breasts so it's entirely possible that this lump is something other than breast cancer.

Try to stay positive and take each day at a time. IF you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they'll be happy to offer some advice and reassurance.

    Best wishes,
