Shadows on lungs!! So worried

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated as I feel like in going out my mind. So bit of back story my husband has had a cough since Feb 2020, but hasn't bothered going to the doctor as he wasn't worried, fast forward to this year, his cough has got gradually worse, every morning he coughs up bright green phlegm and for the last 6 weeks has had blood in it. So finally got him to see a doctor who booked a chest x Ray, the wait was awful , so I finally spoke to my husband doctor today who has said the radiologist has found shadows on both his lungs, and he has been referred for a ct scan, they are saying they think it's unlikely to be cancer due to his age (39) and has never been a smoker, they have mentioned something called sarcoidosis which is a possibility, I don't really know what the purpose of this post is I just feel so lost and the wait for the ct scan is sending me crazy, my husband thinks he's going to die, he has pain in his chest (only over the last 3 weeks) he's breathless just going upstairs and has lost his voice it's been 9 days to since he lost his voice its come back but is very hoarse and changes throughout the day. This has to be one of the hardest things iv gone through not knowing. He did have covid in August and the blood does seem to of only appeared in his phlegm after the bout of covid (he wasn't unwell with covid just flu symptoms headache. I'm sorry for rambling.

  • Hello Charlene88

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's ongoing health problems. It's perfectly natural that you're both feeling so anxious about things and I know many of our members will understand just how hard it can be waiting for tests. Facing the unknown is a scary place to be and many people fear the worst in these cases.

Try to focus on what you do know for now - that the clinicians feel at this point that it's unlikely to be cancer. Try to stay positive and take each day at a time whilst you're waiting for the CT scan. Hopefully, he won't have to wait too long but it may be worth giving the department a call to check on wait times so that you've got an idea about how long it may be. You might also want to ask about any short notice cancellations if this is feasible for your husband to attend.

In the meantime, it can sometimes help to talk things through with someone and I wonder if you might find it useful to chat with one of our nurses. I know they will understand some of your concerns and fears and will be happy to listen and offer any advice and support that they can. If you'd like to chat with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I do hope you have some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for replying. I didn't get notification that someone had replied. Well today he is having his ct scan I have my last day of training as a domiciliary carer too so I feel so stressed and worried about everything.

  • Hi Charlene

I can complete relate to how your feeling. My husband has been having shoulder pains for a few weeks so he was sent for a chest X-ray. They have found a shadow on his lung (I'm not sure if it's on both or one) but he has now had a CT scan and waiting for his results. He is a heavy smoker so that is the biggest worry. Hopefully should get results sometime next week and I am absolutely terrified of what the results could be. It's like my life has been completely put on hold.
