Mixed smear/colposcopy results! So unsure!!

Hi

Anyones thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
I had a regular smear in Jan 2021 resulting in HPV positive and low grade cells. Due to covid I have waited a very long time for a colposcopy, so long that after 6 months I requested to have another smear. This smear returned HPV positive and high grade (moderate) cells. I was straight in for colposcopy in early September where the consultant found no evidence of high grade cells, only low. I had biopsies.

Today I have received an appointment letter, no biopsy results, to return the the consultant in gynaecology. I have no idea if this is for treatment or what the biopsy results! The appointment is 4 weeks away and I feel

like I'm going to go out of my mind with worry without some information.

I'm so confused how it can be low grade, then high grade and then low grade on closer inspection and then possibly being called back in for treatment or worse news.

anyone any thoughts?

  • I've also just recieved my smear results with high risk Hpv but no abnormal cells.

all I would suggest is it takes a very long term to turn cancerous so try not to worry, maybe they haven't gathered enough cells from the biopsy which is why there is a mixed result.

A work colleague of mine today told me she had level 1,2 amd 3 cells so I think you can have a mixture of High and low risk.

I hope you get it all sorted.

  • Hi Betsy

It’s perfectly possible to have different levels of cell abnormalities on your cervix at the same time in different areas, so it depends on where the sampling was done as to what result was produced on any particular test. These abnormal cells are not cancer.

Low level cell changes may be monitored with no treatment, and high level abnormalities would normally require treatment to remove the cells. At the moment it’s impossible to second guess what the appointment with the consultant might bring, but it doesn’t sound like it’s anything serious if your appointment is 4 weeks away. I hope it will put your mind at rest.

  • Thank you.. I had read that there could be mixed. If when the solution is applied to the cervix no high grade cells are visible during the colposcopy,  I wonder how they can be removed. Presumably the entire surface of the cervix isn't unnecessarily sliced away.

Hoping to hear from my consultant this morning.

  • UPDATE

Consultant called and explained that I am going in for the treatment as my actual biopsy returned high grade severe abnormality, graded at CIN3!!  Ive gone from low grade, to high grade moderate, to the woman seeing only low grade to the worst in can be! The good news is that no cancerous cells were detected through biopsy. So they will be removing a slice of my cervix from the entire surface and the final piece of the story will be when that is tested to be completely sure there is no cancer. However she did say that after her visual and biopsy, the chance of cancer is minute. She looked on the system to see if I could be seen earlier, purely to stop me panicking over it, and I’m now in on the 27th Sep.

  • That’s good news for you-best wishes for your procedure.
