Anxious time

Good afternoon I had a tiny black mole removed from lower leg and noticed the last couple of days missed private number phone calls. I phoned after 2weeks the docs just to see if they heard anything and I have been booked with the Dr 1st thing Monday morning.  (He's on holiday this week ) slightly worried about appointment x Any one had this before?

  • No experience of this but hopping in to send you a virtual hug and some positive vibes

    Hi Jak,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I have been through this with three seperate lesions. The wait for the results is always a tortuous time, but fortunately all three of mine were benign.

I sincerely hope that all goes well at your appointment next week. Please let us know. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine

  • Hi Jak21,

You don't say how long ago you had your mole removed before you got the missed calls? Have you Googled the numbers? If it was within 2 weeks of surgery it's unlikely it will be the hospital as results are taking an average of 6 weeks to come back. Also, if they were ringing to give you your results it would then be unusual for them to not try and contact you by letter which is the usual way to contact the patient. If your results are back and your GP has been sent a copy, it's not your GP's role to give you them - the copy they get is just to update their records. GP's shouldn't give results as they don't know the subtleties of skin cancer biopsies. Of course, if the results are benign and your GP realises you haven't heard from the hospital they may be trying to calm your fears by passing on the information. That still doesn't absolve the hospital from informing you in the correct manner though.

My advice is to contact the dermatology department before Monday. Firstly, ask them if the number that rang you is theirs - if it is, ask if it's your results. If it's not your results, they should be able to tell you why they were ringing and they should be able to give you some indication as to how much longer you will be waiting. If it is your results, ask for a ring back by a nurse or consultant as you don't want to wait until Monday for them from your GP.

If the number isn't theirs, still ask if they have your results & if you can have them over the phone rather than from your GP on Monday. If they aren't back yet, ask how long you will waiting. If they weren't the ones ringing you and your results aren't back, it's a mystery why your GP wants to see you on Monday!

I hope this helps and I hope you solve the mystery. Good luck with your results and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
