Persistent sore throat, swollen glands, large tonsil

Hi, I am a 25 year old mum of 3 who doesn’t smoke or drink alcohol. March time 2020 I had tonsillitis which antibiotics helped I noticed then I have a very enlarged right tonsil which hasn’t ever went down. Since then I’ve been having reoccurring sore throats and earaches which never lasted for long. However this past 2/3 weeks I’ve had a terrible sore throat which antibiotics never helped. I’ve got bloods taken and a throat swab which all came back clear so have had an urgent referral to ENT. I have swollen glands and lymph nodes on both sides, throat and ear pain that is switching side from side. My right tonsil has got larger and the left tonsil can barely be seen it’s well hidden.

I am panicking thinking the worse that I have either throat cancer, tonsil cancer or lymphoma, I have been stressing myself constantly making myself ill. It doesn’t hurt to swallow but feels like I’ve something stuck in my throat and terrible throat/ear pain constantly.

has anyone experienced something similar that can outnumber my mind at ease, please.

  • Hello, sorry to hear your going through this worry. I have exactly the same symptoms, I have only had a blood test this morning and am waiting for the results.

I am no expert but I have been asking my GP non stop about what I am experiencing and he isn't concerned at all, I had to ask him several times to let me get a blood test for peace of mind. He explained that the lymph nodes react to infections such a toncilitus. I went to him as I had no signs of infection, I have a friend who had hodkins lymphoma so I wanted to get checked right away ( luckily he beat it within 6 months) but I have just got a really sore throat down one side. So that could explain it, I wouldn't worry too much you have done everything right and got checked. They swell to fight infections so it could well be just that. If you read through other swollen lymph node posts you will find a lot of people in the same situation as you and it turned out to be an infection of some sort or some other less serious illness causing it.

Your mind automatically goes to the worse place, keep an eye on it, look out for any symptoms that change and keep in touch with your GP.

    Hope you get better soon

  • Hey welcome to the forum.

Your problems sound similar to me. Always having to clear your throat? Like there is a frog in your throat? And then it gets sore,so need strepsolis.

My mum died of Throat cancer. So I've always been terrified of it. I started getting a sore throat when I was 27,just as I started travelling. Went thru all the tests, camera down the throat,Barum swallow,MRI. All come back clear. Even had an operation on my nose as could be sinus related.

9 years on,and I still have the same problems. I was told that once you get Sinus problems it's quite often for a long time.

So hope that helps. It's amazing how much Anxiety can make your symptoms worst,or even make up symptoms.
