Colonoscopy - why take biopsies if there were no polyps?

Hi there

I had a colonoscopy. Staff were fabulous and there were no polyps.  But they took ten biopsies and I am not sure why.  I was sedated but not by much as my blood pressure fell so they couldnt top it up, but Im sure they said there was no sign of cancer.  But when I was having the cup of tea afterwards, I asked the nurse.  She said they dont know if cancer or not until biopsies come back.

The report says " bowel muscosa looks normal up to the point of insertion.  TI, right colon and left colon biospies taken today to exclude microscopic inflammation."

Patient management

It was a difficult produre due to long lopy bowel, patient had previous laparoscopic hysterectomy.  Awaiting histology result.

I've googled (of course) and it suggests IBD but I dont have diarrhea.  I dont have weight loss either.

So what are they looking for?  Family history of cancer with three first degree relatives but no colon cancer so really want to believe that the doctor said no cancer.

ps if anyone reading this - dont be afraid to have the colonoscopy as its a necessary evil but do remind them before they start if you have had abdominal surgery even if you have just told the nurse when signing the consent forms.

  • Hello nervousnelly,

Your doctor will want to investigate to make sure they have covered everything. Hopefully you'll know more when you results come back, but it was great to hear that you had a good experience with the staff. When you are worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers online, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. And the only person that can diagnose you is your doctor.

    I hope this is helpful,
