Swollen lymph nodes for 4 years and new ones

Age: 24

Height: 1.72

Weight: 85

Hello, I have lymph nodes under my chin for almost 3-4 years. They are behind my jawbone (Deep submandibular area ) so they are not visble and are hard to touch. At first, I had one each on my left and right side. Over time and over the years, I slowly started to feel new lymph nodes from same area. It's hard to comment on their size, but I feel their size is like cooked kidney beans. They can be moved easily, they are not attached something. Over time, their size has never decreased, but I have not felt that they have grown. If they are growing very slowly, it is very difficult for me to feel the difference. They always seem the same size to me. Over time, I started to think that I had lymphoma because of these lymph nodes, but there is one thing I noticed: Again, for about 2-3 years, white sores, which we call aphthae, appear on my lips. Sometimes I get one on my lip every month, sometimes every two months. When this aphtha appears on my lip, the swollen lymph node on the side of the wound on my lip begins to be painful. This lymph node hurts and burn until the aphthae heal in one week. After the aphtha is gone, the pain of the lymph node also goes away, but the size still remains the same. So whatever size it has been for 3 years, it's still the same. I should add that these lymph nodes existed before I had aphthae in my mouth. But the fact that they become painful when sores in my mouth indicate that they can be reactive lymph nodes. Also fever, night sweats etc. I don't have any of the symptoms like lymphoma. I never felt tired. My questions come right after that:

Would the lymphoma show up with bigger symptoms within 3-4 years?

Can a lymph node with lymphoma sometimes show reactive properties?

And lymph nodes with lymphoma could be the cause of aphthaes in my mouth?

I hope I wrote everything in an understandable way. English is not my native language. Thanks.

(NOTE: I've been to so many doctors over the past 4 years, but none of them found the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes were also not visible on ultrasound. During the process, all my blood tests -including detailed leukemia tests- came back normal. My only lows were vitamins. )

  • Yes, all results were normal. I just had low vitamin levels. At the same time, the doctor ordered some very detailed blood tests. I gave about 9 tubes of blood. But as I said, everything was normal except for the vitamins.

  • Hi, im Charlie and I suffer with stage 4 lymphoma cancer,

for about maybe 2 years before I saw a doctor I had similar issues I had various lumps in my neck just bellow and behind my ear, I left it for a very long time before going to get checked out but from what I've experienced swollen lymphnodes are quite Normal and most people get them due to infection, (I'm not a professional trust me). I do hope you find the source of the problem though I was sent for a couple of biopsy's after my blood test maybe you could see if your gp could look into doing that? I had a biopsy on one of the lumps in my neck and that helped my diagnosis. But everyone's different

  • Did they detect something was wrong by your blood tests as I'm so worried I have lymphoma

  • Best of luck, I hope you are well. Have you had any symptoms other than swollen lymph nodes? Or were there any abnormalities in the blood test? Was there any pain in the lymph nodes? And how much had it grown in size over time?

As I mentioned in the article, I went to the doctor many times, but these swellings are not visible on ultrasound. Maybe because they're too deep. I guess it would be best to get a CT scan.

  • No, as I said, my blood tests were normal.

  • They detected that there was at least something wrong with my blood but couldn't tell what it was at first that's why I was made to do two biopsy's a pet ct scan a ct scan  and about 100 blood test. The lumps would get bigger and then decrease in size and then get bigger again. All I can ask is have you had any changes on how your eating, are you being sick constantly, is there blood in the sick if you are, can you still work and move about properly etc in my personal opinion if you've had the swollen lymph nodes for the amount of time you've said things in your body would've started to change for example I grew tumours in various places and then it became very hard to work my 9-5 it became basically impossible to eat anything because I would bring it all back up I would wake up during the night in a cold sweat coughing and being sick, I don't think you should worry until the hospital or the doctors tell you they think there is an issue

  • And I'm well mate thanks Ive not long finished what I hope to be my last cycle of chemotherapy just waiting for my PET scan and then to wait for the results also only some of the swollen lymph nodes was painful the ones close to my ear but the others I could touch, see and move around slightly

  • I had blood tests done many times in the past years, but all of them were normal. I have never felt sick. Or I did not have symptoms such as night sweats, itching, fever. At the same time, I haven't even had the flu for almost 4 years. I had covid about a month ago, not counting that. But at the same time, as far as I have researched, these may not always be the case with lymphoma. It may be enough just to have a swollen lymph node. Oddly enough, I have swollen lymph nodes for 4 years and no other symptoms. What I was wondering is, if lymphoma was found in these lymph nodes, would there be other symptoms within 4 years? Some doctors say that there may be such situations in slow-growing lymphomas. However, this type of lymphoma is not very common at my age. At the same time, there are constantly sores in my mouth (white sores we call aphthae) and when these come out, my lymph nodes are painful and hot. When the wounds heal, the pain of the lymph nodes goes away, but their size does not decrease. I do not know. I'm really very confused.

  • Yeah that's quite confusing it could be slow growing that might be possible but as you said it's really uncommon in our age group, when I was diagnosed I was told it was really rare for a male my age (20 at the time) to have lymphoma but my diagnosis was a long process because of how long I had left it from what I recall the doctor said he doesn't quite know what caused the cancer to grow or to even start but in his years of cancer research he thinks it was a lymph node infection of sorts that then later caused the lymphoma but mine was fast spreading it went to my neck lungs liver and about 2/3 inches off my spine. But as I said I'm no professional just going off personal experience pre diagnoses I was very ill and I also had Covid just before I got myself checked over maybe the best thing to have done is a biopsy on the lymph nodes or a ct scan just to be sure that it isn't anything serious, however just to try and ease your mind yes everyone is different and yes things react in different ways with other people but the chemotherapy I did was really tough I'll not take anything away from it but Hodgkin's Lymphoma has the highest rate in survival and cures from what I've researched Anyway I don't know how you live your life if you smoke drink etc but from personal experience as a 21 year old cannabis and cigarette smoker and a bit of a party goer (regularly lol) if I can get over it because of my age and because of how strong my system still was despite the years of abuse then I'm sure at your age you would be able to fight it off anyway but please don't take it as me saying oh you'll be fine even if it cancer because like I said everyone's different I see myself as one of the lucky ones really but to put your mind at ease slightly it is fightable but then again it may not even be what your worried about it could be a list of things but let's just hope for your case that it is just an infection of some sorts, I didn't get mouth sores or anything until I started doing chemotherapy but they was a common side effect of it.
