HPV positive with mild dyskariosis

Hi everyone ,

I'm a 29 year old female who has been sexually active only since last 6 months. I went in for cervical cancer screening and was shocked to see that I'm HPV positive with mild dyskariosis. Nhs has invited for a colposcopy. I'm so so nervous! I've just had one sexual partner! And he's never been with anyone else either. I feel so lost and scared and don't know what to do. If anyone has had similar results. Please share your experience. I'm so worried that it's cancer or something!

  • Hi Lisa

Mild dyskariosis is not cancer...it means that you have mildly abnormal pre cancerous cells caused by the HPV virus. At the colposcopy your cervix will be examined in detail with a liquid put on to identify any areas of abnormal cells. You may need treatment, but also there is the possibility that you may not and will be monitored with regular smear tests. The treatment, if needed, is a quick and straightforward procedure to remove the abnormal cells, although it does not remove the HPV. Keeping your immune system as strong as possible with a healthy diet and exercise is the best way to suppress the virus. Unfortunately the number of sexual partners you have had is not really relevant-you can get HPV even if you’ve only had one partner. The virus is transferred via skin to skin genital contact, which means you do not have to have penetrative sex to get it.

  • Thank you so much for the response Minska. I'm just waiting for my colposcopy appointment. Does anyone know approximately what the waiting times are?
