Hpv positive and abnormal cells

Hi, my daughter who is 24 just had her 1st smear which has come back hpv positive and abnormal cells. She is no waiting a colposcopy. NOW THEN 2yr ago she experienced pain during and bleeding after sex with a foul smelling discharge. So we went to gum clinic all sti come back negative. They put it down to ectropian. So now this. She had the HPV vaccine at age 13 she was not sexually active and only had 2 partners from age 17.

My question is. How has it come to this even after vaccine. We are beside ourselves with worry. She is my baby and only 24yrs old

  • Hi TraceyN,

I can understand this must be unsettling. The vaccine offers some protection, but not complete. HPV is common so try not to assume anything at this point - although I know this is easier said than done. You can find out more on our website here.

It may help to talk things through with one of our nurses, who may be able to offer further information and support. If you'd like to do this, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

I hope that the appointment comes around soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Tracey

I did reply to another post you made on this topic..not sure if you saw that. There are over 100 strains of HPV, and the vaccine does not protect against all of them, so it is still possible to contract HPV after being vaccinated.

You can contract HPV even if you only have ever one sexual partner, and it is a virus carried by almost  everyone who has ever been sexually active. For most people it will never cause any issues, but when it does it can cause abnormal cells. But these are NOT cancer and can be easily treated.
