Blood in stools for 5 weeks.

Hello,

I have been opening my bowels more frequently, sometimes 7-10 times a day for pass 5 weeks. I usually go once a day. I also pass blood everytime I go, bright red or dull orange blood. I am losing weight, which is also concerning me. I am 31 and breastfeeding my nearly 1 year old and I also have a 5 year old. I have been to my GP but been seen by a clinician, who has done an internal examination, stool samples and blood tests and no indication of infection. I have been referred for a colonoscopy but told by hospital I could be waiting until November for an appointment

I have booked to see a private consultant as really concerned that it maybe bowel cancer.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

  • Hello Magickettle and a big welcome to our forum!

It sounds like you are in good hands and that they've taken the matter seriously and are carrying out all the necessary investigations. I hope you won't have to wait too long though for your colonoscopy and that your appointment with the private consultant goes well and you get some answers soon.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be as there are so many other things it could be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,

  • I had similar symptoms (and still do to an extent). I had rectal bleeding, some weight loss and while I don't think I was opening my bowels more frequently, I do open them very frequently - maybe 5 or 6 times a day. I never took notice before this started, so cannot tell if it is an increase or not.

The colonoscopy showed nothing other than hemorrhoids. Hopefully, it will be the same for you. The specialist said that at my age, the odds of bowel cancer with my symptoms was less than 1% and I am a few years older than you.

I can understand how anxious you are. I still feel a bit anxious sometimes, as the symptoms are continuing and I was completely freaked out while I was waiting for the colonoscopy, but there really are many possibilities and bowel cancer is unlikely to be the most likely one. I know that is limited help though, as it is probably the most worrying.
