Cervical ectropion- help! What are your experiences?

Hello,

I am 46, possibly perimenopausal and have been told I have cervical ectropian. First mentioned when I was pregnant with my daughter 11 years ago but not checked out further. 4 years ago I got a Merina coil. In last couple of years I've had some spotting, and a couple of what seem like light periods (some cramping, bright red blood) not sure if this is related. In the last 3 months things have got worse. Bleeding on and off for last three months, sometimes brought on by intercourse. I had a notmal Pap smear January (CE noted by nurse then and since by gp when I went in again re irregular bleeding). I called gp today (telephone appointment only), and he referred to colposcopy to 'nip it in the bud' - I mentioned I have terrible health anxiety and asked should I worry:could there be any other cause of the bleeding? and he said no, a clear cause had already been identifed. I asked if it was an urgent referral and he said no (but said I would wait weeks not months). I don't know what to think. My mum had cervical and vaginal cancer which were successfully treated but I have always been massively paranoid. I am scared now.

I just wanted to know what other people's experience of CE is and if my symptoms seem to be in line with what is usual.
The blood is bright red, seen when I wipe (some on pants) and I now have some cramping. I guess you'd describe it as light bleeding. Seems triggered by intercourse but then seems more like a period. Is worsening of symptoms ie bleeding becoming more frequent normal with this?  And cramping as well as bleeding? Currently I have been getting blood when I wipe since 2nd September so that's 6 days with no sign of stopping and cramping is getting more noticeable. Is this usual for this condition? I need to know whether I need to go back to gp.
I hope it's okay to ask this here.

thank you

  • Hello Iamhere,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others dealing with cervical ectropion. If you notice any changes in your symptoms, it might be worth talking to your GP about it just for peace of mind. Do mention the cramping and bleeding and I am sure your doctor will be able to tell you more about this.

Jo's Trust has in-depth information on cervical ectropion which I hope you will find useful.

I will now let our members come and say hello and share their own cervical ectropion stories with you. I hope you get this sorted very soon and that your symptoms improve.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello,

Thank you for replying. I called again and mentioned the bleeding and cramping and the gp said they consider me low risk for anything sinister because the ectropion has been identified by both the nurse and the doctor and I had a clear smear in January. I don't know if I need to do more?
    thank you

ps I have read the info on Jo's site which is helpful but as it's quite generic, it didn't seem to answer these specific questions. I did notice elsewhere though that pelvic pain can be a symptom. The go also thought perhaps I am experiencing an actual period given my coil has been in 4 years now.
