Positive FIT test terrified!!

Hi, new here. (I do read through a lot of forums though)

I'm a 31 year old female.
2 children.

ive been having problems with piles and fissures for a year now. And my doctor made me do a FIT sample yesterday. The results came back today but the doctor wants to speak to me about it as she is going to refer me.

I suffer with bad health anxiety. So you can imagine what my brain is telling me right now.

I'm terrified that they're going to find something, as my stool consistency has changed as well, gone from normal to slightly looser. I've put that down to my diet though.

But they must of found blood in my stool for a positive test?! Doctor is going to ring me this afternoon and I'm so scared.

Has anyone had piles and fissures and had a positive FIT test?
I was on my period the day it was took, Will this affect it? (I know it's not in the same area, but just thought I'd ask)

Thanks in advance

one terrified mum!

  • I'm no expert, but my understanding is that hemorrhoids at least can cause a FIT test to be positive. I had the gFOBT recently and the instruction included not doing it when on your period in case it would lead to a false positive, but I know the FIT is better at distinguishing types of blood so not sure if that would also be a problem there.

The specialist was really surprised I got a negative result on the gFOBT, given that I was experiencing rectal bleeding. When I said I had had the test, he was like "oh, that will be positive. Don't worry about it." He said this while pretty sure my symptoms were caused by hemorrhoids. And again, I know the FIT is better at distinguishing the type of blood, but I do think hemorrhoids can also lead to a positive result on that. Not sure about fissures but I think so.

  • Thank you for the reply.

My doctor rubg me yesterday afternoon and reassured me it will be because of the fissure or the small haemorrhoid I have.  She said my previous blood test in June was absolutely fine and not one red flag on it about anything.

My poo consistency has changed a little bit but not dramatic. It's just gone a little bit looser but I've put that down to my poor diet.

even with the reassurance from the doctor I'm still terrified as there could be a slight chance something is wrong.

I don't bleed every time I go to the toilet. But it's normally bright red blood on my stool or when I wipe. Doesn't look mixed in or anything I don't think anyway.

  • I know you posted a few weeks ago and I hope your issues were dealt with. I think a positive reading can come from inflammation, piles, ibd etc.
but a large number of positive fit tests that are refered for colonoscopy turn out to be nothing at all.
I also suffer with anxiety and k experiencing a bowel cancer scare myself so I know how easily it is to spiral and become completely terrified x

  • Hello, thank you for the reply!

Everything was fine and all normal and healthy! Thank god!

My doctor seems to think I just tear easy every time I have a big poo. Which is annoying but I'd rather have that than anything serious.

hope you're ok! Health anxiety sucks! Im trying so hard not to let little symptoms scare me. X
