Growing dimple on nipple

Hello all,

I have a growing dimple in my nipple. It's more like a centimeter wide dent. It's been getting deeper over the last eight months.

I saw the doctor a few weeks ago who had a look and a feel. She said when people talk about "dimpling" it's because there's a lump underneath that's pulling it down, and mine doesn't have a lump. And therefore, no referral needed.

I was quite happy with this. I've been seriously ill with other illnesses this last year and couldn't quite cope with the thought of more hospital.

I fully trust this doctor, have no reason not to, but it's getting deeper, and I wondered if anyone had any experience of a dent in the nipple that was cancer, without a feelable lump.

Both my mum and nan had breast cancer - my mum just had it for the second time.

And, I should also mention, due to drugs and illness, I put on a lot of weight (especially on my boobs), which is slowly coming off, and I had figured that's what the dent was, and my doctor thought so to, but thought I'd check on here.

I'm mid-thirties, and with the news of Sarah Harding today, and my dent increasing, I thought I'd just check.

Thanks in advance. X

  • Welcome to the forum LauraNewHellooo although I'm sorry for the worry and doubt this is causing.

As you've noticed changes to the dimpling it would be worth going back to your GP to get this checked. If you have more than one GP you could try getting a second opinion from a different doctor if you feel it will help put your mind at ease.

Hopefully some of our members who have had similar symptoms will offer their thoughts and advice to you soon but if you'd like to have a quick chat with one of our cancer nurses about this, you can give them a call on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed this continues to be no cause for concern.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Steph,

thanks for replying! I think it's safe to say this is okay. No one else has commented to tell me any worrying tales, so I think it's good. Someone spoke to me about necrosis, so it may be a bit of that.

    thanks x

  • Sorry I don't have a story on this but what do you mean dimpling on the nipple? My nipple looks like its kind of split and this is the closest breast story I have seen that is similar to mine and after some advice or someone thats had the same my nipple on the left loost split/slit and I'm being referred to the best clinic but the wait is upto 4 weeks and I'm panicking thinking the worst so was looking for positive stories or stories to do with the nipple

  • Hi Kirsty,

Sorry to hear your worrying, I've been to the breast clinic a few times in the past - I'm very noduly - but I think I've always gone in with the mentality it's nothing (because I'm so noduly), I don't know if this helps or not, but it makes me worry less.

I can't give you much advise, other than tell you how mine is. Mine is like - and it really is the only way to describe it - a dent on the side of my areola, next to the nipple. It dips in like a circular scoop. It's the size of a fingertip, but has no lump underneath.

I've been told that when people talk about dimpling, it means there's a lump underneath that's pulling it down, and mine doesn't have that. There's no lump that can be felt, so no referral was needed. Does yours have a lump?

  • Ah ok so mine is different to yours then mine is the actual nipple the only way I can describe mine is like its split in half I put it down to being pregnant but my boy is 6 months now and its still there so definitely isn't that, the nurse had a feel around everywhere when I went to the doctors and said she couldn't feel any lumps at all and lympne nodes was also fine so I guess that's a good sign but I guess not all breast cancer symptoms are lumps they can also be change in shape of nipple this is why I'm extremely worried

I'm so glad yours has turned out to be nothing :)

  • It's good they're checking you anyway. Better to be safe than sorry. I think with actual nipple, any changes are looked into more. Maybe because mine's around it, it's not the same? I am seeing my doctor this week, so might mention that it's dipped in a bit more.

problem is, I've got so many health issues going on, it's a bit much for people to deal with.

have you tried googling pictures of your nipple? I couldn't find any like mine. Think it'd be really useful to have a "nipple gallery", so you could see what other's looked like.

  • Yes I'm glad they are looking into it but the 4 week wait is giving me major anxiety, I've looked on Google but can't see anything similar most in Google are inverted nipple where the whole nipple goes in mine doesn't do this its more slit/cracked

    Thankyou for your post
