Why do biopsies take so long?

I was wondering what actually happens to the biopsy? Does it sit waiting its turn, or is there a process that takes a long time, like growing a culture perhaps?  My polyp was too big to remove from the bowel, but biopsies have been taken, and I was told I will hear in about a month.  It seemed a long time, but now I find it is normal, and some biopsies have taken longer.

Before the colonoscopie, my blood test showed acute anaemia, and I begin to wonder if the polyp had been bleeding? Stools are always dark pebbles when not diarhea. I bought vitamin B tablets at once to take while waiting for my doctor's appointment.

Since the colonoscopie I have a very sore place in the lower left abdomen. Is this normal to have sore spots?

Now I am waiting in fear.

  • Hi Hound and welcome to the community.

Our friendly and very knowledgeable team of cancer nurses may be able to answer your questions about the biopsy process so if you'd like to find out more you can get in touch with them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Pain and tenderness can occur if you have had tissue removed during your colonoscopy but if this persists do be sure to let your GP know so they can check everything is o.k.

Fingers crossed your biopsy results bring good news when they come through Hound.

    All the best,
