Suspected malignant melanoma

I wondered if any one could help as I am feeling incredibly anxious right now.

Myself and my husband are expecting our first baby in December which hasn't helped with my anxiety!

My husband has a mole on his back which iv noticed has been getting slowly bigger over the years. Iv mentioned it to him before but I think he just things am overly anxious. Any way, iv been taking pictures of it trying to monitor and noticed recently it looks bigger than a picture I took over a year ago so I finally convinced him to get it checked. He was referred to the dermatologist who has looked at it with her demascope and she advised it looked malignant and needed to be be excised as soon as possible. Her letter came the other day and she used the terminology "it has the appearance of a malignant melanoma" the appointment to get it removed is not for another 4 weeks and apparently this is their soonest ASAP appointment they can do.

Am so worried  especially with a baby on the way.

Does anyone have any stories where they were told it looked like a malignant melanoma by the specialist and it wasn't?

Thankyou

  • Hi,

I'm so sorry that you & your husband are going through this anxiety, especially at what should be a special time for you both.

Personally, I have had 7 moles/lesions removed that looked worrying - only one was malignant. That typifies the stats for patients who are diagnosed from a biopsy. 75% will be benign, 20% will be dysplastic (pre-cancerous) and 5% will be malignant. The dermascope helps the dermatologist to see any change in cell structure but it still can't give a definitive diagnosis, only a biopsy can, so there is still a good chance that your husband's will be OK. If it isn't, don't panic as treatment is really good these days and it's not the end of the world (my consultant's words many years ago when I thought I was going to die)!

You will get one or two replies from those whose mole results were benign or dysplastic but you won't get many. This isn't a reflection on how many biopsies are clear, just a reflection on the fact that members of the forum that get clear results tend to leave & never come back because they no longer seek advice. You can search the forum for old posts that may help - search 'mole' or 'melanoma' in the Search Forum bar at the top of the page and you will see posts from those who came back to update with their results - sadly only a few kindly return to tell us about their good results so the stats on here are a bit skewed, but it gives you some idea of what others have faced/are facing.

I know it's a long wait for the removal surgery - pre-Covid it would have been removed within 2 weeks. Don't worry - that extra 2 weeks won't make the mole worse but it will shred your nerves. So you both have to find a way to distract yourself from thinking about it at the moment. You can't alter what is going to happen in 4 weeks time and you can't yet know what the result will be so don't waste your nerves and time on dwelling on 'what if's' as it will only stress you out more. So keep busy getting ready for the arrival of your little one and find ways to keep your anxiety bearable - meditation, mindfulness, long walks in the fresh air, pampering yourselves etc.

Good luck and please let us know how your husband gets on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thankyou so much for taking the time to message me.

I really do appreciate and you've put my mind at a little more ease and helped me put it into perspective.

Its the waiting that it hard but hopfully what ever the outcome all will be OK.

Thankyou again, and I hope you are well and OK within your cancer journey?
