Worried

Hi, i am a stage 3a NH lymphoma sufferer but after lots of treatment am now in remission. For the last 6 months I've felt unwell and the symptoms came and went, now I'm constantly suffering.  My symptoms are: constant abdominal pain,  feel like can't empty bowels completely,  pressure in anus,  fatigue, excessive wind and nausea.  I had an mri 2 days ago and got virtual coloniscopy on Monday.

I am really worried about this as I feel I'm getting worse. My doctor isn't worried and has reassured me he's.pretty sure its ibs.  My bloody and urine tests were normal

Am I  making a mountain out of a mole hill?

  • No you're not making a mountain out of a molehill. I have a dermoid ovarian cyst and symptoms including abdominal bloating, constipation, can't lose weight/put on weight very easily, fatigue, low iron levels, acne, weepy a lot of the time. I feel like my quality of life is gone and that my symptoms are not being taken seriously by either my gynaecologist or GP. Even the dietitian I went to was dismissive- I kept telling her that the dietary changes weren't working, that the bloating and constipation would keep flaring up again and again. I thought I had IBS too. I need to get the cyst removed and a biopsy will be done to see if it's cancerous. I have firboids as well but they're not a major concern.

It's good that your blood test results were normal- mine were elevated but I'm being told that dermoid cyst are usually benign. Have you got the results of the MRI yet? MRI has better imaging than ultrasound. Constant abdominal bloating can be a symptom of ovarian cancer or ovarian cyst so keep being assertive.

  • Hi, thank you for replying. It sounds like you are going through hell. Have you had any xrays or ultrasounds?

I've had a gynaecological exam where a camera was inserted, everything looked normal he said.

My mri results aren't back yet but have been told to check middle next week.

What does a ca125 test show? I had 3 tubes of blood taken on Wed,  I pessume they've done full bloods.

  • Thanks..yeah, it's been a nightmare.

Yeah, I had an ultrasound and MRI which showed the ovarian cyst but it doesn't appear to be cancerous but thats not foolproof. Only a biopsy on the cyst will be able to tell if it's cancerous.

I had a physical exam conducted by the gynaecologist and she could literally feel the cyst as it's so large.

The Ca125 show whether you have tumour markers. It tests for cancer. It's not 100% accurate though. My Ca125 levels were elevated which is not good but I've been told that the tumour is still likely to be benign as it's a dermoid cyst. I'm not sure what to believe. I also got blood test for things like iron etc..I had low ferritin levels..basically low iron as I experienced a lot of bleeding in between periods. I have fibroids as well as the cyst.

Hope your MRI results are okay and that your blood tests are okay as well.

Milled flaxseed is really good for trapped wind..start with 1 level tsp and add to porridge or yoghurt. You need to drink a lot of water with it. I was told to then increase the 1tsp to 2tsp and then 1tbsp, then 2tbsp but I also have constipation so you may not need this amount. I would drink at least 500ml with the flaxseed. If you get whole flaxseed, your body can't absorb it so it needs to be milled/ground. You can grind up flaxseed yourself if you want but I just buy the milled flaxseed as it's handier.

If you can't empty your bowels completely, that's a sign of constipation in which case daily walking, lots of water and increasing your fibre intake will help but the flaxseed are literally a lifesaver. My GP prescribed this sachet thing mirolax but the flaxseed is much more natural. Peppermint oil capsules can help with bloating..but it never fully goes away. These are just tips to manage the symptoms in the meantime until you can get proper diagnosis. I find these foods helpful: frozen garden peas, baked beans, gluten free bread that's high in fibre, oats, sweetcorn, prunes, prune juice, kiwis, pears, bananas, red lentils, brown rice. Basically, have a diverse range of fibre in your diet as it helps your gut health. It's a lot of effort to manage, very stressful..I have to keep on top of it all the time.
