Worried about my 3.5 year old

Hello, worried mummy here.
 Please no judgment.

My son has been having severe night sweats for some time now. He also has a lump on his neck this has also been there for a while but I always put it down to a glan being swollen due to a cold/viral. The lump has never gone away. Over the last 6 months he has gotten very tired spends a lot of time sitting on the sofa. Where has before he was very hyperactive and always on the go. He has started falling asleep a lot in the car, witch isn't normal for him. He is very emotional in the night but can't express what is wrong, he is always soaking wet from sweat.
he has always started to complain of a sore body. Obviously still quite hard for him to express what the issue is at his age but dose say that much.
My doctors have never been very helpful with any issue I have been to the gp about wether that be for myself, my son or daughter. I am really worried but don't want them to make me feel silly for bringing it up.

  • Hi. My advice would be to fight for your child. 6 months of symptoms that you describe are not normal and tbh I would take him to a and e or demand to speak to the practice manager at your GP in the morning. I understand your concerns but you need to ask yourself are you more worried about how you will be perceived or more worried about your son. Hopefully it's nothing serious but I can't believe any doctor would ignore such dramatic symptoms as you are describing.

  • Please insist on your GP running tests or go to A and E.  obviously nobody wants to alarm you but what your describing is not normal.  Speaking from personal experience with my son, you must push and push.  Took me over 6mths for my GP/Hospital to realise my son was suffering from more than just "growing pains".  Thankfully once he was diagnosed things kicked in very quick and 15yrs later my son is thriving.

Listen to your heart, if you feel something isn't right, it probably isn't and you need to keep pushing for your boy.  NEVER EVER THINK YOU  SILLY .  You're doing everything you can for your baby - your GP should take you seriously.

Really hope you get the answers you are looking for.

  • Hello BeccaMCa,

I am sorry to hear about your little boy's symptoms and that you feel your doctors haven't been very helpful. You have been given some excellent advice by members of our forum and I would just echo what they have said, that if you feel something isn't right you could go to A and E or if you would like to talk to a different GP there is always the option of getting a second opinion

You could also ring 111 which you can do immediately if you wish and out of hours over the weekend so don't hesitate to contact them.

I hope your little one gets better soon and that they find out what is causing these issues.

    Best wishes,

  • I spoke with a gp on the phone today but they weren't taking me seriously. Didn't want to see his lump on his neck or see him at all.  Unsure where to go from here .

  • You need to speak to the practice manager and say you are unhappy.

  • I'm just tagging in the #mediator,  as to where to go from here... deff ask for a second opinion ...like you've been advised .. or if he's refused to see his lump or to take into account his night sweats and lethargy ... go to A and E ... tell them all your worried about ...

Please try everything .. and find out how to make a complaint about your Dr refusing to see him .. I hope some comes on here with a number for you to call ... but I so hope you get someone to listen to you .. it doesn't sound right even to us non professionals... and try thinking if you can change Drs... good luck ... Chrissie...

  • I know it might not be easy for you especially as you have another child, but I would take him to A & E tomorrow evening.. Just tell it like it is!.You have been trying to access GP care for months, he is constantly tired, has the swelling.on his neck.  Boiling.up and sweat pouring off him.  Say you are at the end of your tether.  I have 5 grandkids and I would have been at the practice door alongside parents if this was one of mine xx Try and let us know how it is going.

  • Managed to see a dr today she wanted to test unrine. She said if the fatigue or lump got larger/worse in the next month then shed do a referral to the paediatric department. I said I was really worried about him and really wanted to get him checked as I felt there was something off. She wouldnt do a referral baced on what I had said today. She saw the larger lump in his neck today and felt 2 others in his neck and still didn't want to do anything :(

  • I'm shocked that your GP is not listening to your concerns.  I'd be complaining to the practise manager and demanding a second opinion

Other than that I'm not entirely sure what your next course of action should be.  I'm going to suggest A & E but also are you in A position to see a paediatric oncology doctor privately?  I believe you can self refer - it may be worth looking into and I think after an initial appointment you may be able to transfer to the consultants NHS list if you need to.

    sorry I can't offer more .

  • Hello again, really at my wits end with my gp. They still won't refer my son. He got saw by a different gp and they said they will refer him...  not hearing anything I phoned to chace up and just got fobbed off. Finally yesterday they told me that the referral never got sent.  Last night I phoned nhs24 in the hope they could help. They eventually said they wouldn't be taking bloods or doing scans or anything in an out of hours. The refral has to come from the gp. His symptoms are getting worse and worse. He's spiking a temp every day now. Trying to insert a photo of the lumps but can't figure out how to do it
