Consultant has changed my 3 year endoscopy to 5 years

I was diagnosed with Barretts Esophegus at age 38 after an endoscopy,at my request(a family history of stomach, throat and eosophegal cancer). This was 12 years ago. I did not handle the diagnosis well and have always had high anxiety before each endoscopy(every 3 years).

As the Barretts has not progressed in 12 years,my consultant has now advised that he would be happy to see me in 5 years time, rather than in 3 years time. I was very surprised but happy to hear this as I had expected him to request me back more frequently because I am older now.

Is this common procedure with endoscopies? I dont take medication for this as I react badly to meds and my consultant doesnt insist on it,I watch my diet and stress levels as much as I can. I have a long history of neglect, trauma and eating disorders, which I have recovered from,my consultant is aware of this and hence why he accepts my trying to manage things myself.

I actually said id come back in 3 years time but he insisted 5 years is fine for next time. This is good news?

  • Hi Cailte51,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds positive that the consultant feels he only needs to see you every five years. It also sounds like you are managing things well.

I'm not sure how common this is, but any questions do raise them with your doctor. While the time has been extended from three to five years, you can of course still speak to your doctor at any point in the interim if you have concerns.

    Wishing you all the best,
