GP referral for breast clinic after course of antibiotics

Two weeks ago I went to my gp as my right breast felt uncomfortable and has a large lump in it. My right breast is at least a cup size larger than my left. After she examined me she gave me a course of strong antibiotics. They hadn't work and I was referred to breast clinic which on the 1st September.

I am really worried, there's not a lot of pain unless I feel the area of the lump, my left breast feels fine no stretch marks etc as opposed to my right.

what will happen at this appointment? I'm really nervous, but at the same time I thought breast cancer didn't hurt. It doesn't all the time only when I feel the lump.

would appreciate any guidance etc

  • Hello Lanes90

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some recent concerns with your breast health. It's good to know that you've got an appointment at the breast clinic later this week.

Initially at the clinic they will take a medical history and then you'll likely see a Dr or specialist nurse for a breast examination. depending on how old you are you may be sent for a mammogram and/or an ultrasound. Typically women under 40 aren't given mammograms because younger women have more dense breast tissue which makes it harder for any changes to be seen. Sometimes if areas of concern are noticed then they may want to do a biopsy at the clinic but don't worry as this is done under local anaesthetic. There's some really helpful information on the Breast Cancer Now website that you may want to have a look at.

Try to keep in mind that the vast majority of women seen at breast clinic do not go on to be diagnosed with cancer.

Hopefully, the appointment on Wednesday will give you some answers and reassurance. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
