Fibroadenoma being cancer?

Hello, I went to my GP about the lump I found and she told me I had nothing to worry about as it's a fibroadenoma and common in my age women with big breasts. She said she is referring me for a scan for both of our piece of mind but it would be a few months wait as it's a routine thing. I am still completely panicking that this could still be cancer and not fibroadenoma and the fact I have months to wait is making it worse? Part of me thinks it can't be bad if it's not an urgent referral

  • Hi Lily_x,

I can understand this must be unsettling and I know the waiting is never easy. Unfortunately waiting times can be a little long, particularly at the moment, but if you can try to sit tight until you get your appointment - and it may come quicker than you think. Try to take things a day at a time and keep yourself distracted while you wait, to help keep your mind off things.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hey I've just turned 21 a few days ago & was told I had a fibroadenoma in my left breast it measured 1.9cm on ultrasound and is oval shaped. Mine was also biopsied because I am currently pregnant so I wanted to be 100%. Hopefully you get a scan soon

  • Can I ask if you got an urgent referral and also if you had any symptoms? Ive had an aching breast quite a lot, she told me it was nothing to worry about and my referral letter is a 6 months wait just for an ultrasound so I'm just worried as this is such a long time although she said it was fibroadenoma x

  • So when I originally called my doctor she actually didn't refer me, she shrugged iT off as nothing which annoyed me because she hadn't actually felt it in person due to only doing telephone appointments,so I called back and demanded I was referred, so she referred me on the 2 week wait, I was seen exactly 2 weeks later, I didn't have no symptoms because my fibroadenoma is only small it doesn't cause no discomfort it will be a bit tender on days if I mess with it too much but other than that I barely remember I have it. Does your lump move or does it feel fixed? Does it feel rubbery or quite hard? Fibroadenomas are usually moveable known as a breast mouse I've heard & they are quite rubbery texture. Could you possibly ring where u have been referred and express how concerned you are and see if they can move ur app to be seen quicker?x

  • I'm glad you finally got seen and it's nothing to worry about! So it's movable round and quite hard and rubbery, she used the term breast mouse also and said that usually the bad lumps are fixed and rough textured. It has been quite achy which I thought was down to my time of the month coming but I've had no sign of it yet. Although she did feel it, I still don't think I will be completely at ease untill I know for definite. She did say it was nothing to worry about and she was only referring me for both of our piece of minds. I called the breast clinic today and they said it would be a 6 month wait but I might phone my GP back and asked to be urgently referred x

  • They do get tender around your period I've heard! Mine only appeared due to my pregnancy hormones I was told or I've had it for a long time but it was very small and I just couldn't feel it but pregnancy hormones made it grow. They can actually disappear on there own so who knows if it definitely is a fibro it might be gone by the time you have a scan! Try and stay positive that your doctor knows best! If she thought it felt like a bad lump she would of put you through quicker I'd imagine. But definitely ring and try be seen quicker for your own piece of mind x

  • [@Lily_x]‍  sorry to hear you are going through this. I was diagnosed with a fibroadenoma 5 years ago now. I was also pregnant when I found this lump and I saw many doctors who kept telling me the same thing but I was adamant it wasn't and it was something far more serious. They did after about 8 months eventually refer me, only to be told at the breast clinic it was indeed a fibroadenoma. I still have it now and yes around my menstruation it gets quite tender and achy. At the end of the day it's your body and if you are worried go back to your gp and ask them to make an urgent referral. I always thought breast referrals were on the 2 week wait. A couple months ago in my other breast a lump appeared under my nipple and even though we were under many restrictions I was seen within 3 weeks of referral. Thankfully again all was ok. I hope you get an appointment soon and everything turns out well for you x
