Post menopausal bleeding

Hi,

I am in a bit of a state.... again! I am 56 years old and went through the menopause about 6 years ago. I had my first episode of post menopausal bleeding about one year after my last period. My doctor fast tracked me for all the usual tests; pelvic scan, hysteroscopy and biopsy and all came back clear. They just noted I had quite a few fibroids. It the. Happened again 4 months later so I had to go through the procedures again. All clear thank goodness.
Then last July 2020 it happened again. At this point I was suffering from very bad health anxiety and was prescribed sertraline and had counselling which has helped but I do still immediately suspect the worse. I had transvaginal scan and hysteroscopy again last year and all came back clear. I then had a bad reaction for 2 weeks after with an infection and put on antibiotics. I had an appointment with the gynaecologist at the hospital to discuss results and she suggested I had the mirena coil fitted to prevent thickening of the lining of uterus. The lining was 4mm which was fine but she said it could help so I agreed. I then had bleeding for about 3 months after but they said it was normal. Then all seemed to settle down about Jan 2021. Then 2 weeks ago I noticed brown discharge on the toilet paper, (sorry for the graphic description!) and after a couple of days it was pink. I phoned the doctor and she saw me the same day and did a cervical smear and swab to see if there was an infection. She said my cervix looked fine. Results are back and there is no infection but still waiting for smear test results. The doctor said if there was no infection she would ring the hospital to see if they want to see ne again. I am so worried. I keep having very small amounts of green/brown discharge. I can't believe this is the fourth time it has happened. I am worried sick something has been missed. Can't stop thinking it must be something bad. Why does it keep happening?
sorry for the very long post

  • Hello JProd

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with ongoing issues of bleeding. It's understandable that you're feeling worried with this most recent episode particularly after all that you've already been through.

It's good to hear that your GP is investigating things and will follow up with the specialist if necessary.

In the meantime whilst you're waiting for the results you might find it helpful to have a look at the NHS website information about health anxiety. I'm sure that lots of the tips of coping and managing were things that you talked about during counselling but it may be helpful to have a reminder.

Alternatively, if you'd like to speak with our nurses for some support and advice you're welcome to call them. They'll be back in the office after the bank holiday on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I do hope that you get some answers and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Not sure my issue is the same but it's similar in that I've been having regular episodes of bleeding since May 2020 when I was virtually 3 years menopausal. After continuous monitoring, scans, blood tests and 2 hysteroscopies (all normal except for oestradiol which was higher than expected though not at premenopausal or HRT levels) consultant believes it's hormonal ovarian activity. My GP thought he might suggest inserting a coil but he didn't, not least because I had a very late menopause at age 60. I see him again in a couple of weeks to discuss further and like you can't help thinking it's so abnormal it has to be bad but all the tests I've had suggest not. In fact after last hysteroscopy I was told that if it wasn't for the long history of repeated bleeding, they would be discharging me.

Hope my tale of woe helps you know you are not alone

  • Hi Jumid,

thank you so much for replying. It really does help reading others comments and advice. I have my scan tomorrow morning and am very worried. I had actually stopped bleeding about a week and a half ago but this morning I went to the toilet and there was, (sorry about the graphic description!), green mucus??? Lovely. This is new. I have constant mild pain still in lower left pelvis. I am very confused about the whole thing really. Just hoping it's some sort of infection or something. Just have to wait and see but can't help thinking it's the worst.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Slightest twinge in my lower abdomen and I'm imagining the worst. Saw the consultant last week and whilst he's confirmed that none of the tests, scans or monitoring have given the slightest indication of cancer in themselves, he can't come up with a plausible explanation or any reassurance as to when it might sort itself out (if ever) so, better out than in and just in case, I'm to have a full hysterectomy. Of course, I'm now worrying that it's been left too late and then I have to reprimand myself and say if it was that bad the scans etc.. would surely have picked something up by now. Good luck with your scan.

  • Hi again,

I am sure if they would have found something. It sounds like you have had all the checks. They said to me last time that sometimes these things happen and they don't know why. Hysterectomy sounds like a good plan though. I am very worried about tomorrow but thank you for your supportive words. I just feel this time it feels different,

  • Hi Jprod,

    Hope you are keeping well

Do you mind sharing your final results please as I am very similar to the symptoms you have. What did your doctor say in the end?

    Thank you
