Am I stressing out for nothing?

Hello everyone, I am a 22 year old female. I have some minor health issues, IBS and PCOS which have sort of made me quite aware of changes in my body and gave me quite a bad health anxiety.

So about a month ago, I started feeling a weird pain in my left breast, didn't think much of it at first but it was a different pain from when my period is about to come, it was sort of half way through my cycle and it was a shooting, stabbing pain and I could also feel a lump kinda thing on my breast, just felt like a small part of it was a bit swollen. That shooting pain lasted about 3 days, I phoned the doctor to make an appointment on day 2 but couldn't actually see her for the next 10 days because I suddenly had to self isolate as my mum came down with COVID.

After the 3 days of an intense pain, it sort of calmed down but it was still painful when I pressed on it up until I could see my doctor. She basically said that it's nothing to worry about, I'm too young for it to be serious and "to get over it". She barely even felt my breasts because "she had to be super quick due to covid, and how busy they were." (Side note, I sat in the waiting room by myself for almost 30 minutes) Anyways, it lasted a few more days after the appointment and its been like it comes and goes, some days I'll feel it a bit more, when I press on that spot, some days not at all and weirdly some days I can feel this sort of lump and other days, not so much. My breasts are quite lumpy in general (which the doctor did notice but didn't say it was anything to worry about) so it's hard to feel it at all sometimes.

On the day when I can feel it more though, it feels harder than the other little lumps in my breasts which I'm sure are normal and still a bit painful. Anyways, because of how the pain became less intense and how it came and went,  I sort of stopped worrying so much about the breast itself and just got on with things but about 3 days ago, I also started feeling a slight pain in my armpit, but brushed it off as an ingrown hair which I had many times, those bumps always went away after like a day or two but now, it just feels a lot different. First of all, it's red and looks like a swollen lymph node, it hurts a lot more than an ingrown hair bump normally does (also I now, can't see any ingrown hair which I normally can) and I noticed I suddenly developed a little bit of a rash above my armpit. Not sure if it could be related but I also developed an intense pain in my arm yesterday but MAYBE I hit it accidentally at work and I just can't remember.. but it feels exactly like when you get a covid vaccine or if someone punches you (best way to describe it, lol) just an intense, dull pain and because of the swelling it hurts to lift my arm up or move it, I can feel it, even if I'm sat still resting my arm.

So yeah, I'm just quite worried but don't want to panic and the last time I seen my gp, the way she spoke to me, has put me off going back so much and left me feeling like any pain I have is just in my head and like I was wasting her time. I am obviously not looking for medical advice and I know realistically at 22years old, the chances of it being something sinister are slim but if anyone had something similar under their armpit and has seen a doctor about it, I'd really appreciate any responses.. I am just unsure whether to keep pestering my doctor because I am really worried about this and its constantly on my mind but the stress of going back there is even worse. I apologise how chaotic this whole message is but I find it very hard to explain things properly.

  • Hello Mar2302

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing health concerns at that you're feeling worried about your breast health.

It's unfortunate that you had a negative experience with your GP last time you arranged an appointment. Is there another GP in the practice that you could request to see or maybe a practice nurse that you could chat things through with?

If the lump is red and swollen and doesn't settle then do speak to your GP surgery to get it checked and make sure there is no infection. Hopefully, things will settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,
