COVID MODERNA VACCINE - LUMP ON LEFT NECK

Hello, I hope this comment finds you all well.

I am reaching out to see if anyone has experienced a similar situation to what I am going through, in general and/or following their covid-19 vaccination.

After my first Moderna Covid Vaccination, I noticed a small pea sized lump on the left side of my neck - what I assume to be my cervical lymph node. Im not sure if it was there before the vaccine, but it was only afterwards that I noticed it.

I wasn't too alarmed, but fast forward 8 weeks and the lump is still there and hasn't reduced in size at all :-(. I have visited my GP, and he referred me for the 2 week scan - however, the consultant explained that she would need to see me in person before conducting a scan, and the only available appoint would be end of September.. seems like a long wait!

After googling my symptoms online, I'm struggling to find any solution for the lump on my cervical lymph that isn't lymphoma. The lump is on the left side of my neck, around half way from my ear to shoulder. Super worried as I have a family history of cancer, and feel petrified that it could be what I'm fearing most.

For context; I am a 25 year old female, generally healthy - dont smoke, and dont drink much. But as mentioned, have a close family history of cancer.

Big big thank you to anyone who has had the kindness to read, grateful for any advice or support!

  • Good evening all,

    I hope all is well.

I just had my first Pfizer vaccine yesterday and have noticed my neck is now slightly swollen with a lump on the left side around the collar bone area.

My left arm also feels slightly tingly/numb, did anyone else experience this?

It would be great to hear what the scans found from all that had one and the progression since all the messages...

    Have a great evening.

  • I also had a similar thing a couple of months ago and wish I had found this thread at the time so I am posting to try to reassure others.  I also wonder if it is linked to the vaccine (I am generally pro-vaccination and I would not want my story to put anyone off being vaccinated, but it may help allay concerns of others with similar lumps!) but this has not been confirmed.

I am a health 29yo female.  I had my first moderna vaccine mid-June.  I had Covid mid-July (I had a fever for 4 days - I've never had one for so long - and lost my taste and smell for about 10 days but otherwise recovered fine). I then had my second moderna vaccine mid-August.

Then mid-September I noticed a hard pea-sized, painless lump on left side of my neck halfway between ear and collar bone.  It could have been there before, but I didn't notice it until at least a month after my second vaccine.  I expect it had not been present (at least in the hard state I noticed it) for long as I would notice when washing and brushing my hair.  Once I found it I kept noticing it.  I had no other symptoms such as cold, fever or other swollen glands.  When the lump was still there after a week I went to my GP who said it was probably a lymph node and to come back if it was still there in 4 weeks or got worse in the meantime.  I tried to stop worrying about I but told my mother, who convinced me to get it checked out privately.  The ENT doctor inspected my nose, throat, mouth, felt the lump and said it felt like a benign lymph node.  I had thought the lump felt "immobile" (which the internet suggests could be a sign of cancer), so it was reassuring the specialist did not feel immediate cause for concern.  However he referred me for blood tests and an ultrasound just to make sure.

While waiting for the test results I found the lump sometimes hurt when I drank alcohol (but not every time) and I developed a sore throat just on my left hand side, along with a slight feeling of constriction in my throat.  On a couple of occasions over the next 4 weeks I found the area around the lump hurt and the side of my neck ached for a few days, and/or the lump itself became tender to touch,  but then it went back to being painless.  The lump did not increase in size or noticeably change in hardness. The feeling of constriction in my throat gradually subsided.

At the start of November (about 6 weeks after first noticing the lump) the ENT doctor called to say all seemed fine, the lump did not seem to be worrying and my blood test results were also fine.  It was probably a viral infection; my blood test results did show I had had EBV (glandular fever), but probably some time previously.

The following week I had a cold ("the Super Cold"?), including sore throat and cough and lost my voice completely for about 4 days.  When those symptoms cleared up my neck lump finally softened over the course of a few days and disappeared (about 7/8 weeks after I first noticed it).  I do not know if there was a connection between the cold/sore throat and the neck lump disappearing but mention it hear for completeness; as both doctors I saw said the most likely cause of the lump was a viral infection they could I guess be connected.

A couple of other people I know have also been complaining about neck lumps recently, so I suspect there could be a link between the Covid vaccine and the lump I had, but obviously my social group is a small sample size so probably not worth reading too much into.  My neck lump was on the same side as the arm I had my vaccine in, which I guess could be another sign. However thankfully for me the lump never got very bad and has now been gone for over a week.  If it was a side effect of the vaccine, to me the slight discomfort seems to be outweighed by the benefits of the vaccine (in spite of me spending a few weeks being rather worried about it being cancer!)

I hope everyone else on this thread also has reassuring results and feels better soon!

  • ive got similar to you its on my left side, which came up after my first jab its on the end of the left side of my neck middle part, however i had the Phizer jab, i was told properly a zist as its hard but since my second jab its got a tiny bit bigger.

  • Hello, I realize this post is a few months old but wondered if your neck lump ever resolved. Finding myself in a similar situation, 3 weeks post Covid vaccine and have a lump in my throat when I swallow that is on same side as vaccine arm. Came on exactly 3 days after my shot. No other symptoms. Thanks for your help! Sabrina

  • Hi,

I have the same thing as all of the posters, currently waiting on a scan. It appeared a few weeks after having my Moderna booster jab and is still here 6 weeks later. I have no other symptoms and no pain it's just a swollen lump on my neck.

Would love to know if anyone else has had a positive outcome and how long it took for the lump to go completely?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

Have you had your scan now?  Hope it all went OK.

I have lumps above my collarbone on both the right and left sides of my neck which appeared 6 days after the Moderna booster.  I had a blood test and ultrasound scan.  Both the ENT consultant and radiologist acknowledged that it could have been caused by the vaccine.  The lumps are still there now (vaccine was 7th January).  I have been told that they may never go back to normal, although I am very much hoping they do over time as I'm a super anxious person and keep worrying they are getting bigger!  I think more and more people are reporting neck lumps as a side effect from the vaccine.

  • Hey all

Just seen this post and thinking wow I hadn't thought of this myself...

    AZ 1 & 2 had 2021

Pfizer booster had February this year due to working in the NHS. We had to be triple boosted.

My symptoms started pre covid but now wondering since I have had covid in November which started off my current symptoms, I'm intrigued I hope you all receive positive new and they are just related to the vaccine and I'll certainly ask my specialist when I see her in a few weeks as I ended up in hospital last month after having a rather large irregular bleed with pain shooting down one leg ouch :( which they said was caused by the vaccine as it can interfere with your cycle.

    Take care

    X

  • Thank you for the in-depth reply. I have a similar presentation following my Moderna bivalent booster last September (2022). Being sent to Head & Neck specialist to possibly do a biopsy. Has little or no impact on my life apart from the obvious worry. Initial blood work and sonography showed nothing untoward.
