Hysteroscopy

Hi, new to the forum but hoping for some reassurance. I have had an urgent referral to gynae for hysteroscopy and possible biopsies after 3 weeks of heavy bleeding. I am only 43 but have been in surgical menopause for 6 years. I am very worried about the outcome but I think even more so about the procedure. I have read horror stories of unbearable pain. Has anyone had experience of having one and tolerating it?

Thank you

  • HI there Giggsy,

I had my hysteroscopy this morning and your advice was 'spot on', it wasn't too bad at all.  Totally agree that it's more very uncomfortable than painful.  The worst part was taking the biopsy but it was soon over.  Great advice too not to read any scare mongering of screamers in agony!  It genuinely was nothing like that for me and was totally bearable, although I did have local in my cervix (probably because of my caesarians).  Obvs I've got to wait for biopsy results but it was so nice to hear from the Dr that visually he can't see anything wrong with my uterus.  Can't tell you how good it was to hear that!  He told me that sometimes they can't find a cause or explanation for menopausal bleeding and it's just what it is.  Whilst it always needs checking I hope my experience  can reassure anyone feeling anxiety about the procedure.

  • Thank you for posting this update. I feel far less nervous after hearing back from everyone in this chat. The discomfort will be worth it to find out what is causing my bleeding. That's now 4 weeks and 1 day and I am tired and worried.

I really hope you have your results soon and I have e eruthing crossed it is good news for you.

    Xx

  • Thank you for replying. All your replies have really helped me realise I can do this and tolerate the discomfort. I just wish I had a date!

  • I never thought of it like that but so true, we only ever hear the horror stories. I have a much more positive attitude to it now. Thank you x

  • Keep pushing to be seen and try not to worry too much.  Of course we will all worry about biopsy results but the actual hysteroscopy is nothing to be concerned about.  It feels a positive thing to actually be getting to the route of the bleeding and there are many causes for it which can easily be treated.  Try to stay positive.

All the best and take care xx

  • Hi Arran.
Have you had your date through. How did it go? Mine is on Wednesday and can't wait for it to be over!

  • Hi,

I have it tomorrow at 09.30. Very nervous but actually relieved it's nearly here. Bleeding for 7 weeks now so really want to know why. I keep telling myself it won't take long and it's necessary.

    Xx

  • Aah ok.  Well tomorrow is good.  You are bound to be nervous but I'm sure it will be over before you know it. I am too though.  I'm on week 4 of bleeding.  So we need to find out whats happening.   Hopefully just a polyp that they can remove.

Good  luck for tomorrow.  I'll be thinking about you.
Let me know how you get on   Xx

  • Morning,

Its over! Not nearly as bad as I feared. Honestly, don't be too anxious about it. I took Paracetamol and ibuprofen an hour before my appointment which really helped. Dr and nurse were lovely. Everything looks fine. They think the bleeding is linked to my HRT. So relieved!

Good luck tomorrow, honestly its just a bit uncomfortable but not painful. Xx

  • Aah I'm so pleased for you.   I'll try not to worry. It's easy to build things up out of proportion.

im so glad it's all good news for you.  Thank you for sharing your experience.  Xx
