2ww normal procedure

Hi, I'm just trying to work out whether my experience regarding the 2ww is normal or if something has gone wrong.

I was referred for suspected lung cancer on the 14th july by my GP due to an abnormal x-ray, i haven't seen my GP in person just had a brief telephone conversation where I was informed i was being referred. I was booked in for blood tests at my GP's at the same time and told the hospital would be in touch to book me in for a CT scan.

I received a very basic letter dated 14th July which I presume was from the hospital (it had no address or contact numbers on it) saying I had been referred by my GPs and a Triage specialist will be in touch.

The blood tests came back abnormal and i was informed by text from my GP to pick up some antibiotics at the chemist, which I did but there was no follow up by anybody after the course finished.

After 13 days without contact I rang me GP's who told  me I should have had a CT scan on the 20th July, but i didn't make this appointment and had no knowledge of it. They gave me the number of the radiology department and told me to book an appointment myself, the earliest appointment was the 3rd august which I made.

I left it another week to give them time to read the scan and then rang my GPs again as it's the only number I have. They just told me to ring the radiology department to see where they sent the scan and then gave me a number for the respiratory specialists.

The radiology informed me the scan was definitely sent to the respiratory team, but they weren't answering the phone so I left them a message but nobody returned my call.

After another week and many more unanswered phone calls and left messages someone from the respiratory team actually rang me back this monday morning and told me they would try and see what's going on and get back to me.

Im still waiting..

I know they are busy but It's been 5 weeks today since my referral and I've still not been contacted by a triage specialist or been given any information whatsoever.

Is this normal?

  • Welcome to Cancer Chat, IsaacN.

I'm sorry to hear about the waiting you're experiencing. As many forum members here can attest waiting for for that phone call from the doctors can be incredibly difficult.

Hopefully others who have had a similar experience will come along shortly to chat with you and offer their opinion but until then if you think it might help to chat with someone medically trained, our team of nurses would be happy to take your call on this phone number 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

I hope you don't have to wait for much longer, IsaacN.

    Best wishes,
